Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged to strengthen Russia’s national security and protect its citizens as Ukraine steps up retaliatory strikes deep inside Russian territory, marking another escalation in the prolonged conflict between the two countries. Speaking at a gathering of the ruling United Russia party on Sunday, Putin acknowledged the growing challenges facing Russia but insisted that the country would overcome them and maintain the integrity of its borders.
His remarks came at a time when Ukraine has increased the frequency and reach of its drone and missile attacks against Russian military installations, oil facilities, logistics hubs and infrastructure. Kyiv says these operations are a direct response to Russia’s sustained missile and drone assaults on Ukrainian cities, civilian infrastructure and energy networks since the war began in February 2022.
Russia acknowledges growing pressure
Addressing party delegates, Putin admitted that Russia is facing significant difficulties, including attacks on infrastructure and security concerns. However, he maintained that the government is actively responding to these threats and remains confident about safeguarding the country’s future.
The Russian leader emphasized that authorities are committed to ensuring public safety, defending national borders and maintaining stability despite repeated attacks on strategic installations across several regions. He also described the strikes as attempts to undermine Russia’s internal stability, while promising a determined response from the state.
Ukraine expands cross-border operations
In recent weeks, Ukraine has intensified long-range drone operations targeting Russian territory. Ukrainian forces have reportedly struck oil refineries, fuel depots, pumping stations and military facilities that are considered vital to Russia’s war logistics.
Kyiv argues that these attacks are aimed at weakening Russia’s military capabilities and reducing its ability to sustain offensive operations inside Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly stated that military-related infrastructure inside Russia constitutes legitimate targets because they directly support Moscow’s war effort.
Energy infrastructure under strain
Several of Ukraine’s recent strikes have targeted Russia’s energy infrastructure, causing disruptions at oil refineries and fuel distribution facilities. The attacks have reportedly contributed to fuel shortages in certain regions, prompting Russian authorities to monitor domestic supplies more closely.
Earlier on Sunday, Putin also acknowledged ongoing fuel supply issues affecting motorists and businesses. The Russian government has established a special task force to stabilize fuel availability and ensure sufficient supplies ahead of the agricultural harvesting season. Officials have indicated that additional measures, including tighter export controls, remain under consideration if necessary.
War continues with heavy aerial attacks
The conflict remains dominated by large-scale drone and missile exchanges. Ukraine has continued striking military and industrial targets inside Russia, while Moscow has maintained intensive aerial bombardments against Ukrainian cities.
Air defence systems on both sides remain highly active as each country attempts to intercept incoming drones and missiles. Civilian casualties and infrastructure damage continue to be reported across multiple regions, highlighting the growing humanitarian cost of the conflict.

Despite occasional international calls for renewed peace talks, neither Moscow nor Kyiv has indicated any immediate willingness to compromise on core issues.
Russia continues to pursue its military objectives while Ukraine insists that restoring its territorial integrity remains essential for any future settlement. The expanding use of long-range strikes by both sides has further complicated prospects for negotiations and increased concerns about a wider escalation.
