PURI: The annual Rath Yatra in Odisha’s Puri witnessed a tragic turn on Thursday after a stampede-like situation reportedly broke out during the grand procession of Lord Jagannath, leaving one devotee dead and around 100 others injured.
The incident occurred as lakhs of devotees gathered on the Grand Road to witness and participate in one of India’s largest religious festivals. Initial reports indicate that the deceased is believed to have died due to suffocation, while many injured devotees were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim or confirmed the exact cause of death.
Crowd Rush During Chariot Pulling
The incident reportedly unfolded when an enormous crowd surged forward near the chariots carrying Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra. Thousands of devotees attempted to move closer to the sacred chariots, resulting in heavy congestion and panic in certain sections of the procession route.
Eyewitnesses said several people lost their balance as the crowd became increasingly dense. Many devotees fainted because of suffocation and exhaustion before rescue personnel managed to reach them. Medical teams and volunteers immediately shifted the injured to hospitals and temporary health camps established for the festival.
Emergency Response Launched
Odisha authorities swiftly activated emergency response measures after reports of the incident emerged. Ambulances stationed along the Rath Yatra route transported the injured to hospitals, while additional healthcare personnel were deployed to manage the situation.
Senior administrative and police officials reached the site to supervise rescue operations and ensure that medical assistance was provided without delay. Officials stated that emergency teams remained on high alert as the religious procession continued under heightened security arrangements.
Around 100 Devotees Receive Medical Treatment
According to preliminary information, approximately 100 devotees sustained injuries ranging from minor bruises to breathing difficulties caused by overcrowding. Many people reportedly suffered from dehydration, exhaustion and suffocation due to prolonged exposure to the dense crowd and humid weather conditions.
Doctors attending to the injured said that several devotees were treated and discharged after receiving first aid, while others continued to remain under medical observation. Authorities are monitoring the condition of those admitted to hospitals.

The Rath Yatra is among the world’s largest religious gatherings, attracting lakhs of devotees from across India and abroad every year. Ahead of this year’s festival, the Odisha government had announced elaborate security arrangements, including designated safe zones, evacuation corridors, medical camps and extensive police deployment to regulate crowd movement.
Despite these preparations, the unexpected crowd surge created a challenging situation for security personnel managing the procession. Authorities are now expected to examine whether additional crowd-control measures are required for the remaining rituals of the festival.

Senior government officials continued monitoring developments throughout the day. Police personnel, disaster response teams and volunteers remained deployed across key locations to prevent further congestion and assist devotees.

During the event, the deities Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra are taken out of the Jagannath Temple and placed on elaborately decorated wooden chariots before being pulled by devotees to the Gundicha Temple.
