A 23-year-old Indian student from Punjab has died in Canada after allegedly being strangled by her live-in partner, prompting a homicide investigation by Canadian authorities. The victim, Damanpreet Kaur, originally from Samrala in Punjab’s Ludhiana district, had moved to Canada several years ago on a student visa to pursue higher education and build a better future.
The case has drawn attention in both India and Canada, with members of the Indian community expressing grief over the incident and extending support to the victim’s family.
Incident Reported in Edmonton
According to the Edmonton Police Service, officers responded to a residence in the Silverberry neighbourhood of southeast Edmonton on July 9 after receiving reports of an unresponsive woman with suspicious injuries. Emergency medical personnel treated Damanpreet at the scene before taking her to a hospital in critical condition.
Despite receiving medical treatment, she succumbed to her injuries on July 12.

Authorities initially withheld the exact cause of death while investigators gathered evidence and conducted forensic examinations.
Autopsy Confirms Homicide
A post-mortem examination carried out on July 14 concluded that Damanpreet Kaur died due to strangulation. The Edmonton Medical Examiner officially ruled the death a homicide, leading investigators to intensify their inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police later disclosed that the investigation indicated no involvement of additional suspects.
Partner Charged with Second-Degree Murder
Canadian police have arrested 22-year-old Ritish Kumar, an Indian national, in connection with the case. He has been charged with second-degree murder under Canadian law.
Investigators have described the incident as an intimate partner homicide, indicating that the victim and the accused were in a domestic relationship. Authorities have also clarified that they are not searching for any other suspects in connection with the case. The allegations against the accused are yet to be tested before the court.
Family’s Dream Ends in Tragedy
According to family members, Damanpreet had travelled to Canada around five years ago after her parents reportedly arranged financial support through loans to fund her education abroad. Like many international students, she hoped to build a successful career while pursuing her studies.
Relatives said the sudden tragedy has devastated the family, who are now preparing to bring her mortal remains back to India for her final rites.
Community Raises Funds
Following the incident, members of the Indian community and well-wishers launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with the expenses of repatriating Damanpreet’s body to India.
The fundraiser quickly received widespread support, raising more than $18,000 and moving close to its target amount. The campaign aims to help the grieving family manage transportation costs and other related expenses during this difficult period.
Investigation Continues
Canadian authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the alleged murder. Police have indicated that evidence collected during the investigation formed the basis for the charge against the accused.
The case will now proceed through Canada’s judicial process, where prosecutors are expected to present evidence before the court. The accused will have the opportunity to respond to the allegations during legal proceedings.
