Punjab has been shaken by the killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota, who was allegedly shot dead by a medical store owner during a confrontation in Mansa. The incident, captured during a Facebook Live session, has intensified concerns over the state’s drug problem and sparked a fresh political controversy over public safety and law enforcement.
According to reports, Jhota had visited the medical store to question its owner about the alleged sale of drugs to a man earlier that morning. The confrontation escalated into a heated argument, during which the shopkeeper allegedly pulled out a firearm and opened fire at close range.
Jhota sustained fatal gunshot injuries, while one of his companions was also seriously injured. Police reached the scene after the shooting, and the accused reportedly fled from the spot.
Facebook Live Captures Fatal Confrontation
The shooting was captured in a video streamed on Jhota’s Facebook account. The footage reportedly shows the activist questioning the medical store owner over allegations that intoxicating substances had been sold to a customer.
Jhota was seen challenging the shopkeeper and demanding accountability over the alleged transaction. The disagreement escalated as the two continued arguing, with the activist reportedly threatening to pursue legal action over the matter.
During the confrontation, the shopkeeper allegedly produced a pistol and fired at Jhota. The recording captured the sequence of events before the live stream ended.
The disturbing nature of the incident has drawn widespread attention to the risks faced by people who confront suspected illegal drug sales. However, the allegations concerning the medical store and the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain matters for the police investigation.
Jhota Had Been Campaigning Against Drug Abuse
Parvinder Singh Jhota had become known in Mansa and neighbouring areas for his campaign against drug abuse and the alleged sale of addictive substances through certain medical stores.
He frequently used social media videos to highlight suspected drug-related activities and confront individuals he believed were involved. His interventions attracted attention online and brought him into the public debate surrounding Punjab’s persistent narcotics problem.
Jhota had also come into the spotlight in 2023 following a dispute involving a medical store owner. Reports at the time said cases were registered against him and some of his associates in connection with allegations including assault, trespass and rioting. He was arrested that year and subsequently released.
His death has brought renewed attention to the contentious methods sometimes employed by activists who directly confront people suspected of involvement in illegal activities.
Medical Store Owner Reportedly on the Run
Following the shooting, the accused reportedly shut the medical store and escaped. Police began looking into the incident as supporters and other local residents gathered following news of Jhota’s death.

The investigation is expected to establish the sequence of events leading to the firing, examine the video evidence and determine the allegations surrounding the medical store.
The injuries suffered by Jhota and his companion have also placed the focus on the immediate circumstances of the confrontation. The authorities will need to establish responsibility through the investigation and applicable legal proceedings.
The case has raised serious questions about how complaints of suspected illegal drug sales are handled and whether people reporting such activities receive adequate protection.
Opposition Targets Bhagwant Mann Government
The killing has triggered sharp criticism from opposition parties, with Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal questioning the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s handling of law and order and its anti-drug campaign.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring condemned the incident and accused the state government of failing to provide adequate security to those raising their voices against drug abuse. He argued that Jhota’s death exposed shortcomings in the implementation of the government’s anti-drug initiative, Yudh Nashean Virudh.
Warring also recalled meeting Jhota’s family in 2023 and expressed condolences to his relatives and supporters.

Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal also expressed shock over the killing. He criticised the state government’s response to the drug problem and described its much-publicised anti-drug campaign as ineffective. His remarks added to the political pressure on the AAP administration following the incident.
Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia also condemned the killing and questioned whether the state was doing enough to protect people speaking out against narcotics. He alleged that Jhota had been targeted while exposing suspected drug-related activities.
These allegations reflect the opposition’s political response to the incident and have not, by themselves, established government responsibility for the killing.
Punjab’s Drug Crisis Returns to the Spotlight
Jhota’s killing has once again placed Punjab’s drug problem at the centre of public and political debate. The state has faced persistent concerns over narcotics trafficking, substance dependence and the alleged illegal distribution of addictive medicines.
The AAP government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has promoted Yudh Nashean Virudh as a campaign to combat drug abuse and trafficking. However, the latest incident has prompted opposition parties to question the effectiveness of the government’s approach.
The case also highlights the challenges involved in tackling suspected illegal drug sales through informal confrontations. While public reporting and community vigilance can draw attention to possible wrongdoing, allegations need to be investigated by the relevant authorities and addressed through lawful procedures.
The shooting has raised broader questions about the enforcement of drug-control laws, accountability in the pharmaceutical retail sector and the safety of individuals who report suspected criminal activity.
Investigation and Accountability Remain Key
As the investigation proceeds, the immediate priorities include identifying and apprehending the accused, examining the available video footage, recording witness statements and establishing the circumstances that led to the shooting.
The authorities will also need to investigate the allegations concerning the suspected sale of drugs that reportedly triggered the confrontation.
Jhota’s death has left his supporters demanding answers and intensified scrutiny of the state’s response to drug abuse. The incident is likely to remain a major political issue as parties debate public safety, enforcement and the effectiveness of existing anti-narcotics measures.
Ultimately, the investigation must establish the facts surrounding the fatal shooting and ensure that those found responsible are dealt with under the law. The case has also underscored the urgent need for effective action against drug abuse and illegal drug distribution, alongside measures to protect those who raise concerns about suspected criminal activity.
