PM Modi To Inaugurate SEMICON 2026 As India Accelerates Global Chip Revolution

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate SEMICON India 2026 in Delhi, bringing global chipmakers, investors and policymakers together as India expands semiconductor manufacturing, design and electronics capabilities.

India is preparing to highlight its growing semiconductor capabilities as the fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 is scheduled from September 17 to 19 at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the three-day event on September 17, marking another significant milestone in India’s ambition to establish itself as a major global hub for electronics and chip manufacturing.

Global Industry to Converge in New Delhi

Organised jointly by the India Semiconductor Mission, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, and SEMI, SEMICON India 2026 will bring together companies, technology leaders, policymakers, investors, researchers, academics, startups and students from India and abroad.

The event will be organised around the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem”, highlighting India’s efforts to develop capabilities throughout the value chain. The sector is witnessing rapid transformation as artificial intelligence, advanced computing, electric vehicles, telecommunications and digital technologies continue to increase demand for sophisticated chips.

Over 600 Exhibitors to Showcase New Technologies

The exhibition is expected to feature more than 600 exhibitors, including around 300 international companies, across approximately 15,000 square metres of exhibition space. More than 150 speakers are expected to participate in sessions covering technological developments, investment opportunities and emerging challenges.

Six international country pavilions and 12 state government pavilions will provide platforms for companies and governments to present their capabilities and identify opportunities for collaboration.

The programme will also include a Startup Pavilion, Innovation Showcase, Startup Pitch Competition, Student Hackathon and Workforce Development Pavilion. Around 40 startups are expected to feature in the dedicated startup showcase, while the workforce initiative will focus on skills, employment and talent development in microelectronics.

‘Sand to Silicon to Systems’ Experience

One of the major attractions will be the new “Sand to Silicon to Systems” Value Chain Experience. The initiative will offer visitors an overview of the manufacturing journey, covering materials, fabrication, advanced packaging, chip design, electronics and complete systems.

The showcase is designed to demonstrate India’s progress across multiple stages of the value chain rather than focusing solely on chip fabrication. It will also create opportunities for Indian and overseas companies to explore technology partnerships, investment, supply-chain cooperation and commercial linkages.

AI, Chip Manufacturing and Supply Chains in Focus

The conference programme will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions and strategic sessions examining major trends shaping the semiconductor industry.

Discussions will cover artificial intelligence, manufacturing, advanced packaging, materials and equipment, chip design, research and development, supply-chain resilience, startups, innovation and workforce development.

The programme will further include six International Country Roundtables, a Women Empowerment and Leadership session, a Workforce Development Session and a special discussion titled “Stronger Together: Industry Associations Collaborating for India’s ESDM Growth.”

Major global and Indian companies expected to participate include ASML, Applied Materials, Teradyne, Infineon, Ebara, Jabil, IBM Research, NXP, Tata Electronics, Micron, Merck KGaA, Rapidus, Lam Research, CG Power, Uno Minda, Advantest and Tokyo Electron.

India Moves From Semiconductor Policy to Production

The 2026 edition arrives as India’s semiconductor strategy moves increasingly from policy announcements toward manufacturing and commercial activity. Under the Semicon India Programme, the government has approved 12 projects aimed at creating a stronger and more resilient domestic ecosystem.

Three of the 12 projects approved under the first phase have already commenced commercial production, reflecting progress in translating government incentives and industrial policy into operational capacity.

The Union Cabinet has also approved Semicon 2.0, the next phase of the initiative, built around six major pillars intended to accelerate development across the ecosystem.

Government Expands Support for Chip Design and Innovation

Alongside manufacturing, India is strengthening research, chip design and innovation capabilities. Electronic Design Automation tools have been made available to more than 400 academic institutions and 105 startups.

Meanwhile, 24 startups have been approved under the Design Linked Incentive Scheme to develop innovative semiconductor products and applications. These initiatives are intended to encourage domestic intellectual property, strengthen research capabilities and create a larger pool of semiconductor talent.

Global Chip Demand Creates New Opportunities

The global semiconductor industry is undergoing a major restructuring as companies and governments seek diversified, reliable and trusted supply chains.

Against this backdrop, SEMICON India 2026 is expected to provide India with an important platform to attract investment and showcase opportunities in chip design, manufacturing, research, packaging and electronics.

The global semiconductor market was valued at approximately $796 billion in 2025 and is projected to surpass $2 trillion by 2030. India’s domestic semiconductor demand, estimated at around $50 billion, is also projected to reach nearly $103 billion by the end of the decade.

India Targets a Larger Role in Global Chip Supply Chains

The fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 comes as countries worldwide compete to secure semiconductor investments and build resilient technology supply chains.

Its “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem” theme reflects India’s broader objective of connecting materials, manufacturing, packaging, design, electronics and integrated systems.

With global technology companies, investors, policymakers, researchers and startups gathering in New Delhi, the event is expected to generate new partnerships and strengthen connections across the industry.

The gathering is also expected to underline India’s ambition to become a globally competitive destination for semiconductor and electronics manufacturing.
