Bangladesh Signals Bold Reset With India As Dhaka Seeks To Heal Deep Bilateral Strain

Bangladesh has signalled a fresh push to repair ties with India, seeking bilateral dialogue after years of political tension following Sheikh Hasina’s departure from power.

Bangladesh is looking to turn a new page in its relationship with India, with Dhaka signalling its willingness to pursue direct bilateral engagement after a prolonged period of diplomatic strain. The latest outreach comes against the backdrop of disagreements surrounding former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, regional diplomacy and Bangladesh’s evolving foreign-policy priorities.

The renewed emphasis on bilateral talks suggests that Bangladesh wants to move beyond some of the most difficult chapters in India-Bangladesh relations and establish a more pragmatic framework for engagement. The development assumes significance as both neighbours remain deeply connected through geography, trade, security, energy, transportation and people-to-people links.

Dhaka Looks Beyond the Hasina-Era Tensions

Relations between New Delhi and Dhaka deteriorated significantly after Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh in August 2024 and travelled to India following the political upheaval that ended her government. Her continued presence in India subsequently became one of the most sensitive issues in bilateral relations.

Bangladesh has sought her return, while India has maintained its position amid the continuing legal and political developments surrounding the former prime minister. The issue has remained a major source of friction between the two countries and has complicated efforts to rebuild diplomatic confidence.

The political transition in Bangladesh has also brought a major change in the country’s foreign-policy environment. The election victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the return of Tarique Rahman as prime minister have created a new political setting in which Dhaka and New Delhi must redefine their relationship.

Experts have suggested that rebuilding trust will require both countries to focus on practical interests rather than allowing individual political disputes to dominate the entire relationship.

BRICS Episode Adds Fresh Diplomatic Pressure

The latest push for a reset comes shortly after tensions surrounding Bangladesh’s participation in the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Bangladesh had indicated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would not attend the summit, adding another layer of diplomatic sensitivity at a time when India was hosting the major international gathering.

Bangladesh

Despite such disagreements, the latest messaging from Dhaka indicates that Bangladesh does not want its relationship with India to remain trapped in a cycle of confrontation.

For New Delhi, stable relations with Bangladesh are strategically important because of the countries’ extensive land and maritime connections and India’s links with its northeastern states. Cooperation with Dhaka also has implications for regional connectivity, trade routes, border management and security.

Major Issues Still Stand in the Way

Although both sides may be looking for improved relations, several difficult issues remain unresolved.

The future of Sheikh Hasina is one of the most prominent challenges. Other sensitive areas include border management, alleged killings along the frontier, river-water sharing and trade-related concerns. The Ganga water-sharing arrangement and the long-pending Teesta issue remain particularly important for Bangladesh.

Concerns surrounding the safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh have also remained part of India’s broader concerns. At the same time, Dhaka has repeatedly raised issues involving border incidents and what it sees as unequal treatment in bilateral relations.

These matters mean that a political declaration of improved ties will not automatically translate into a complete diplomatic reset. Sustained dialogue and confidence-building measures will be necessary to address the underlying disputes.

Trade and Connectivity Could Drive the Reset

Economic interests could nevertheless provide a strong foundation for rebuilding the relationship.

India and Bangladesh have extensive commercial links, while both countries have an interest in improving connectivity and keeping cross-border economic activity stable. Recent discussions have also focused on restoring passenger railway services that connect the two countries, including the Maitree, Bandhan and Mitali Express services.

Energy cooperation, fuel supplies, fertiliser, transport connectivity and border trade could similarly become important areas for renewed engagement.

For Bangladesh, maintaining productive relations with India is economically significant because of the scale of bilateral trade and India’s geographic importance. For New Delhi, stronger engagement with Dhaka can reinforce connectivity with India’s Northeast and support wider regional integration.

A Difficult but Possible New Chapter

The latest developments point toward cautious diplomacy rather than an immediate transformation in relations.

Both countries have strong reasons to avoid prolonged hostility. Bangladesh needs stable relations with its largest neighbouring power, while India has a strategic interest in maintaining a peaceful, stable and economically connected eastern neighbourhood.

The challenge will be to separate long-term national interests from short-term political disputes. Analysts have warned that unresolved questions involving Hasina, water sharing, border management and identity politics could still derail efforts at reconciliation.

For now, Dhaka’s call for bilateral dialogue represents an important opening. Whether it becomes a genuine India-Bangladesh reset or merely another temporary pause in a troubled relationship will depend on how effectively both governments address their most sensitive disputes.

After years of mistrust and diplomatic friction, the message from Bangladesh is clear: restoring communication with India is once again becoming a priority. The next phase will test whether political will can translate that message into concrete cooperation.
