Prime Minister Narendra Modi played a significant diplomatic role in preventing Russian President Vladimir Putin from using tactical nuclear weapons during the Ukraine conflict in late 2022, according to Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski. The remarks have once again highlighted India’s growing influence on the global stage and New Delhi’s unique position as one of the few countries maintaining communication with both Moscow and Kyiv.
Speaking during his visit to India, Bartoszewski said that President Putin pays close attention to Prime Minister Modi’s views because of the long-standing relationship between India and Russia. He added that Modi remains among the very few world leaders capable of exerting influence on the Russian leader during times of crisis.
‘Putin Pays Attention to What PM Modi Says’
Highlighting India’s diplomatic standing, the Polish minister said that Prime Minister Modi enjoys considerable respect internationally and has maintained consistent communication with Russia even amid the ongoing conflict.
According to Bartoszewski, “President Putin actually pays attention to what Prime Minister Modi tells him.” Referring to the critical phase of the war in 2022, he claimed that Modi’s intervention helped discourage Russia from using tactical nuclear weapons against Ukraine, a move that could have dramatically escalated the conflict.
The Polish official further stated that India’s influence remains important even today and suggested New Delhi could continue playing a constructive role in efforts aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war through dialogue and diplomacy.
