NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to undertake a two-day visit to West Bengal later this month, a trip that is expected to carry both cultural and political significance. According to reports, the Prime Minister Modi is likely to arrive in the state on June 20 to participate in programmes linked to Bengal Day and remain in Kolkata on June 21 for the main national event marking International Yoga Day.
The visit comes at a time when West Bengal occupies a prominent place in national discussions. Bengal Day, observed to celebrate the rich cultural heritage, history, and contributions of the state, is expected to feature prominently in the Prime Minister Modi’s itinerary. Political observers view the event as an opportunity to highlight Bengal’s historical role in India’s freedom movement, literature, education, and social reform.
Sources indicate that June 20 may include a public programme where the Prime Minister is expected to address citizens and pay tribute to Bengal’s cultural legacy. The event is likely to emphasize the state’s contribution to nation-building and showcase the Centre’s engagement with the region.
The second day of the visit will coincide with International Yoga Day on June 21. West Bengal has been selected as the venue for the main national celebration of International Yoga Day 2026, making it the focal point of yoga-related activities across the country. Union Ministry of Ayush officials have already announced that the flagship event will be hosted in the city under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been one of the strongest advocates of yoga at the global level, is expected to lead the celebrations. Since the United Nations adopted June 21 as International Yoga Day in 2014 following India’s proposal, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has participated in major yoga events across different cities. Over the years, these celebrations have attracted millions of participants and helped popularize yoga as a tool for physical and mental well-being.
This year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” focuses on the role of yoga in promoting long-term health, mental wellness, and active lifestyles among people of all age groups. The Ministry of Ayush has launched nationwide outreach programmes and awareness campaigns leading up to the event. Officials believe that the West Bengal celebration will witness large-scale participation from yoga practitioners, students, senior citizens, and social organizations.
Reports suggest that the main yoga programme may be organized at Kolkata’s iconic Red Road area and adjoining grounds, where thousands of participants are expected to gather for a synchronized yoga session. Organizers are preparing extensive arrangements to accommodate attendees and ensure smooth conduct of the event.
The Prime Minister’s visit also assumes significance because it will be one of his first major public engagements in West Bengal after recent political developments in the state. His presence is expected to draw considerable public attention and may serve as a platform to discuss development initiatives, cultural identity, and public health awareness.
Government officials and local authorities are expected to coordinate security, logistics, and public participation plans in the coming days. Preparations for both Bengal Day celebrations and International Yoga Day have already gained momentum, with several institutions, schools, and community groups planning related activities across the state.
The proposed two-day visit is significant on multiple fronts. It highlights West Bengal’s cultural importance through Bengal Day celebrations while reinforcing India’s global leadership in promoting yoga through International Yoga Day. The visit is also expected to strengthen public engagement, encourage healthy living, and showcase Kolkata on the national stage as the host city of one of the country’s most prominent annual events.
