At least 15 people, including 12 Pakistani soldiers, were killed after militants rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a joint security checkpoint in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The deadly assault took place overnight in the Tank district, an area close to the Afghanistan border that has witnessed repeated militant attacks over the past several years.
According to Pakistan’s military, the attackers used a vehicle packed with explosives to smash through the perimeter of the checkpoint before detonating it. The powerful blast caused extensive destruction, damaging the security installation and surrounding structures.
The checkpoint was jointly operated by military personnel and police, making it a strategic target for militants operating in the region.
Security forces retaliate, kill 12 militants
Following the explosion, heavily armed militants attempted to storm the damaged checkpoint. Pakistani security personnel responded with an intense counter-operation that continued for several hours.
The military said its forces successfully repelled the assault and killed 12 militants involved in the attack. Clearance and search operations were launched immediately after the encounter to ensure no additional attackers remained in the area.
Officials described the response as swift and coordinated, preventing the attackers from gaining control of the security post despite the massive explosion.
Casualties include soldiers, police personnel and government official
Among those killed were 12 soldiers, two police officers and one government official attached to the checkpoint. The attack ranks among the deadliest assaults on Pakistani security forces in recent months.

Military blames Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan
Pakistan’s military attributed the attack to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Pakistani Taliban. The group has intensified attacks against security forces, police installations and government facilities in recent years.
Although no immediate claim of responsibility was reported, the military maintained that the attack followed a pattern commonly associated with TTP operations involving suicide bombers and coordinated armed assaults.
Region remains vulnerable to militant violence
The Tank district lies within Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan and has long been affected by militant insurgency. Security officials say militants frequently exploit the difficult terrain and border areas to launch attacks before retreating.
Pakistan has repeatedly expressed concerns over cross-border militant activity, while the Taliban administration in Afghanistan has denied allowing its territory to be used for attacks against neighboring countries.
The latest incident underscores the persistent security challenges facing Pakistan despite continuous military operations against extremist groups.
Rising attacks on security personnel
The attack comes amid a broader increase in militant violence targeting Pakistani security forces. Suicide bombings, roadside explosions and coordinated assaults have become more frequent in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and parts of Balochistan.
