A powerful flash flood in Nepal’s mountainous Rasuwa region has triggered widespread destruction, leaving at least eight people dead and several others missing after the Bhote Koshi River suddenly surged through settlements near the Tibet border. The disaster struck on Wednesday, with floodwaters reportedly entering Nepal from the Tibetan side and sweeping through villages and infrastructure along the river system.
The sudden nature of the disaster has raised fears that the death toll and scale of destruction could increase as rescue teams reach isolated areas. Authorities have deployed the Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel for search, rescue and relief operations, while helicopters have been sent towards affected areas. However, high water levels have made it difficult for aircraft to land in some locations.
Raging Bhote Koshi River Triggers Widespread Destruction
The Bhote Koshi River, which originates in Tibet before entering Nepal, rose dramatically and unleashed powerful torrents across parts of Rasuwa district. Timure and Syapru Besi were among the areas severely affected, with floodwaters damaging homes, roads, bridges and commercial infrastructure.
Videos circulating online showed the extraordinary force of the water. Muddy torrents were seen crashing through mountain settlements, destroying bridges and carrying away structures within seconds. One video showed a bridge being overwhelmed by the rushing water before sections of it were swept downstream.
The devastation was not limited to Rasuwa. Floodwaters also affected areas along the Trishuli River and reached districts including Nuwakot and Dhading, where eight bodies have been recovered, according to reports.
Officials have warned residents living close to riverbanks to move to safer locations as authorities remain concerned about further flooding.
Security Personnel Among Those Missing
The disaster has also affected Nepal’s security forces. At least 26 Nepal Police personnel are reported missing in Rasuwa, while seven personnel from the Armed Police Force are also unaccounted for. The figures underline the seriousness of the disaster and the difficulties facing rescue teams operating in mountainous terrain.
Nepal Police spokesman Abi Narayan Kafle said authorities were still assessing the full extent of the destruction. Officials have warned that many settlements could have been affected because of the enormous volume and speed of the floodwaters.
The Nepal Army has mobilised helicopters and disaster-response teams, while police and other emergency personnel have been deployed to assist residents and search for missing people.
Major Hydropower Facilities Damaged
The flooding has caused a major blow to Nepal’s electricity infrastructure. The Nepal Electricity Authority said six major hydropower and transmission facilities were damaged by the floodwaters.
Among the affected facilities are Rasuwagadhi, Chilime, Trishuli 3A, the Trishuli 3B Hub 220 kV Substation, Trishuli Hydropower Station and Devighat Hydropower Station.
The damage has disrupted electricity generation, transmission and distribution in affected areas. Reuters reported that around 430 megawatts of Nepal’s electricity supply was affected, representing more than 12 per cent of the country’s total hydropower capacity.
Several highways have also been closed because of the flooding and damage to transportation infrastructure, complicating efforts to deliver emergency assistance and reach isolated communities.
Nepal Government Launches Emergency Response
Prime Minister Balendra Shah has convened an emergency meeting of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority to assess the situation and coordinate the response.
The government has instructed officials to relocate people living in vulnerable low-lying areas and urged communities along rivers to remain alert. Medical teams, security personnel and relief agencies have been mobilised to support rescue operations.

Authorities are continuing to collect information from affected districts to determine the complete scale of casualties and property damage.
Tibet Also Reports Major Impact
The disaster has also affected areas across the border in Tibet. Reports from China’s state-run Xinhua news agency said a mudslide hit the Gyirong area, causing major damage and casualties and disrupting roads, communications and electricity infrastructure.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of Himalayan communities to sudden flooding and landslides, particularly in areas where rivers cross national boundaries.
The cause of the latest flood has not yet been conclusively established. However, the region has previously experienced sudden floods associated with glacial or mountain hazards. Scientists have repeatedly warned that rising temperatures and changing climatic conditions can increase risks from extreme weather and unstable Himalayan landscapes.
Rescue Efforts Continue Amid Fresh Danger
As rescue teams continue their operations, authorities are maintaining high alert in downstream areas along the Trishuli River. Residents in vulnerable locations have been advised to avoid riverbanks and move towards safer ground.
With roads damaged, bridges washed away and several areas difficult to access, rescuers face major logistical challenges. The priority remains finding missing people, evacuating those at risk and providing medical and emergency assistance to communities affected by the devastating Nepal flash floods.
The disaster has once again exposed the extreme vulnerability of Himalayan settlements to sudden floods and landslides, with the human and economic cost likely to become clearer as rescue and assessment operations continue.
