A major security incident was reported along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, October 12, after four suspected terrorists, including a senior Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander, were killed in a landmine blast during an alleged infiltration attempt in Poonch district.

The explosion occurred in the Krishna Ghati sector, where the group was reportedly attempting to cross into Indian territory from the Pakistan-occupied side of the LoC. According to reports citing officials, the deceased included Mohammad Faizan, identified as a senior commander of the Pakistan-based terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The incident triggered heightened alert measures across the sensitive border sector, with security forces increasing surveillance to assess the situation and prevent further infiltration attempts.

Landmine Blast Foils Alleged Infiltration Attempt

According to reports, the explosion took place in the Satwal-Naki area of the Krishna Ghati sector in Poonch district. The area is regarded as a traditional infiltration route and has witnessed previous attempts by suspected terrorists to cross the heavily guarded international boundary line.

The group allegedly attempted to enter Indian territory when the landmine exploded, killing all four individuals at the spot, officials said in reports published on Monday.

The circumstances surrounding the blast have not been fully established. However, preliminary reports linked the explosion to the anti-infiltration mine network deployed in forward areas along the LoC.

The latest incident once again highlights the security challenges faced by Indian forces in preventing cross-border infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir.

Top Lashkar-e-Taiba Commander Among Those Killed

The four deceased were identified as Mohammad Faizan, Mohammad Ishtiaq, Mohammad Waqas and Mohammad Asim, according to reports citing security officials.

Faizan was identified as a senior Lashkar-e-Taiba commander. The other three individuals were also described as suspected terrorists involved in the alleged infiltration attempt.

Reports stated that the four were residents of Mandla in the Madarpur area of Tehsil Hajira, located in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Lashkar-e-Taiba is a Pakistan-based terrorist organisation that has been linked to numerous attacks in India and is designated as a terrorist organisation by several countries.

The reported death of a senior LeT commander in the blast could represent a setback for the group’s operational activities along this stretch of the LoC. However, further details about Faizan’s specific responsibilities, activities and links to other operations were not immediately available.

Security Forces Intensify Surveillance Along LoC

Following the explosion, security forces sounded an alert across the Krishna Ghati sector and increased vigilance along the LoC.

The immediate priority was to assess the circumstances of the incident, monitor nearby areas and ensure that no additional infiltration attempts went undetected.

The LoC remains one of India’s most sensitive security zones because of the persistent threat of cross-border infiltration and militant activity. Indian security agencies maintain surveillance systems and deploy multiple layers of protection across vulnerable stretches of the border.

The Satwal-Naki area has previously been associated with infiltration attempts. Security personnel therefore remain particularly vigilant in the region.

Officials have also referred to earlier incidents in which members of Pakistan’s Border Action Team were reportedly killed in similar circumstances involving mines in the broader border area.

Two Rusted Landmines Discovered in Mendhar Sector

In a separate development on Monday, Indian Army personnel discovered two rusted landmines near the border fence in the Basoni area of Poonch’s Mendhar sector.

According to reports citing officials, the devices were detected during track-construction work at approximately 8:25 am and 12:10 pm.

Army experts subsequently destroyed both explosive devices in controlled explosions, preventing the potentially dangerous objects from remaining at the site.

The discovery highlights another security concern in the mountainous border region, where landmines and other explosive hazards can pose risks to troops and civilians.

Weather Conditions Can Increase Landmine Risks

Landmines have been deployed in several forward areas along the LoC as part of the anti-infiltration security system. These devices are intended to help prevent unauthorised crossings through vulnerable stretches of the border.

However, environmental conditions can complicate mine management. Heavy rainfall and water runoff may dislodge older mines or expose devices that were previously buried, potentially creating hazards in unexpected locations.

The discovery of the two rusted mines in Mendhar underscores the importance of regular monitoring, explosive ordnance detection and controlled disposal operations in the region.

Poonch Remains a Sensitive Border Security Zone

The latest blast and the discovery of additional landmines underline the continuing challenges confronting security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s border districts.

Poonch’s difficult terrain, mountainous landscape and proximity to the LoC make border surveillance a demanding task. Security agencies must remain prepared to respond to suspected infiltration, unexploded ordnance and other threats in forward areas.

The killing of four suspected infiltrators, including a reported senior LeT commander, has prompted renewed vigilance in the Krishna Ghati sector.

Further details about the circumstances of the explosion and the alleged infiltration attempt may emerge as authorities assess the incident. For now, the focus remains on maintaining security along the LoC and preventing any potential breach of the border defences.
