A 26-year-old Indian-origin man, Gurbhej Singh, was killed in a knife attack in Southall, west London, prompting a major investigation by the Metropolitan Police.
According to police, officers and paramedics were called to North Road, near the junction with Dormers Wells Lane, shortly after midnight on June 10 following reports of a stabbing. Upon arrival, emergency responders found two injured men at the scene. Gurbhej Singh had suffered a serious knife wound and, despite efforts by medical personnel, was pronounced dead at the location. A second man, believed to be in his 30s, was taken to hospital for treatment and was later discharged.
The Metropolitan Police formally identified the victim as Gurbhej Singh and confirmed that specialist officers are supporting his family during the investigation. Detectives believe the assault occurred outside a shop at the intersection of North Road and Dormers Wells Lane at around 12:30 a.m. local time.
As part of the inquiry, seven men aged between their early 20s and late 30s were arrested on suspicion of murder. Following further investigations, six of those arrested were released without further action, while one individual has been released on bail pending additional inquiries.
Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell of the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command said investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal attack. She urged anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may possess CCTV, dashcam, or mobile phone footage, to come forward and assist the investigation.
Reports from Punjab indicate that Gurbhej Singh hailed from Mehdipur village in Tarn Taran district. He had moved to the United Kingdom in 2022 in search of better employment opportunities and was supporting his family back home. Relatives described him as the family’s primary source of hope for improving their financial situation.
Family members have appealed to the Indian government and community organisations for assistance in bringing Gurbhej Singh’s body back to India for his final rites. Local social groups and community leaders have also stepped in to support the grieving family during the difficult period.
The killing has drawn attention within both the Indian and South Asian communities in the United Kingdom, particularly in Southall, which is home to a large Punjabi and Sikh population. Police have not yet disclosed a motive for the attack, and investigations remain ongoing. Authorities continue to appeal for information that could help establish the events leading up to the fatal stabbing.
