NEW DELHI: Kuljeet Singh Chahal, Vice Chairman of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), inaugurated a newly constructed modern public toilet behind Patiala House Court, reaffirming the civic body’s commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Mission and the development of world-class urban amenities. Speaking at the inauguration, Chahal said the project reflects NDMC’s continuous efforts to provide clean, safe and citizen-friendly public infrastructure for residents and visitors alike.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by heads of various NDMC departments and senior officials, highlighting the importance of expanding public sanitation facilities across the national capital.
Modern Sanitation Facility Built to Meet Growing Public Demand
Speaking at the inauguration, Kuljeet Singh Chahal said that the newly developed public toilet has been designed with modern features to address the increasing demand for quality sanitation facilities in one of the city’s busiest public zones.
The earlier toilet complex occupied nearly 25 square metres and had become insufficient to cater to the growing number of visitors in the area. To overcome this challenge, the old structure was completely demolished and replaced with a newly built facility spread across approximately 50 square metres.
Constructed at a cost of around ₹22 lakh, the project was completed within five months. According to NDMC officials, the redevelopment was undertaken with a focus on improving hygiene standards, accessibility and user convenience.
Separate Blocks for Men and Women with Contactless Technology
The newly inaugurated toilet complex features separate sanitation blocks for men and women. The men’s section includes three water closets and five sensor-based urinals, while the women’s block has three water closets.
Officials said the sensor-operated urinals have been installed to reduce unnecessary water consumption while also promoting better hygiene through contactless operation. The upgraded facility also incorporates improved ventilation and modern fittings, making it cleaner, safer and more comfortable for users.
The use of water-efficient technology aligns with NDMC’s broader efforts to promote sustainable civic infrastructure while maintaining high standards of cleanliness.
NDMC Expanding Public Hygiene Infrastructure Across Its Area
Highlighting the scale of NDMC’s sanitation network, Chahal said the civic body continues to strengthen public hygiene facilities throughout its jurisdiction.
The NDMC area covers approximately 42.74 square kilometres and currently has 364 public sanitation units operating across different locations. These include:
- 291 Public Toilet Units (PTUs)
- 40 Community Toilet Units (CTUs)
- 33 Public Urinals (PUs)
According to NDMC, these facilities serve thousands of residents, office-goers, tourists and visitors every day. The council has been steadily modernising existing units while constructing new facilities wherever public demand has increased.
Officials added that maintaining accessible sanitation infrastructure remains an important component of improving urban living standards in the capital.
Facility to Benefit Court Visitors and General Public
The newly constructed toilet is strategically located behind Patiala House Court, one of Delhi’s prominent judicial complexes that witnesses heavy daily footfall.
NDMC said the upgraded facility is expected to benefit a wide range of users, including lawyers, litigants, court employees, visitors and members of the general public who frequent the area.
Given the constant movement of people around the court premises, the addition of a larger and better-equipped sanitation facility is expected to significantly improve convenience while supporting cleanliness in the surrounding locality.
Officials believe that improved public amenities also contribute to a more organised urban environment and enhance the overall experience of citizens accessing public institutions.
Commitment to Swachh Bharat Mission
During the event, Kuljeet Singh Chahal reiterated that the development of modern sanitation infrastructure is in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Mission, which emphasises cleanliness, public health and improved civic services.
He said NDMC remains committed to providing clean, secure and citizen-friendly public facilities while adopting modern technologies that improve efficiency and environmental sustainability.
According to him, projects like the Patiala House Court public toilet demonstrate the council’s ongoing efforts to ensure that essential civic amenities meet contemporary standards of hygiene and convenience.
Modernisation of Civic Amenities to Continue
NDMC officials said the council will continue upgrading public toilets and other civic infrastructure across its jurisdiction in the coming months.
The civic body plans to focus on improving sanitation facilities, public convenience and urban infrastructure while ensuring that citizens have access to high-quality public services.
At the conclusion of the programme, Kuljeet Singh Chahal appealed to residents and visitors to use public facilities responsibly and help maintain cleanliness. He stressed that public participation is essential for preserving civic infrastructure and achieving the larger objective of keeping the national capital clean and hygienic.
