NEW DELHI: India and Japan have reaffirmed their shared commitment to combating terrorism, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi issuing a strong joint message against cross-border terrorism and Pakistan-based terror groups during the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit in New Delhi.
The two leaders condemned recent terrorist attacks targeting India and urged the international community to take decisive action against globally designated terrorist organizations.
India-Japan Send Strong Message Against Terrorism
During the summit, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Takaichi unequivocally denounced terrorism in all its forms and stressed that there can be no justification for acts of terror. Their joint statement highlighted concerns over cross-border terrorism and emphasized the need for stronger international cooperation to eliminate terrorist networks and their financial support systems.
The two countries specifically called for coordinated global action against United Nations-designated terrorist organizations, including Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), Al Qaeda and ISIS/Daesh. They also urged nations to dismantle terrorist safe havens, disrupt financing channels and prevent the movement of terrorists across borders.
Condemnation of Recent Terror Attacks
The joint statement strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and also denounced the Red Fort blast that shook New Delhi. Both leaders expressed solidarity with the victims and their families while reiterating that those responsible—including planners, financiers and perpetrators—must be brought to justice without delay.
The leaders also took note of the United Nations Security Council Monitoring Team report that referred to The Resistance Front (TRF), reinforcing international concerns over terror networks operating in the region.
Strengthening the India-Japan Strategic Partnership
Beyond counter-terrorism, the summit underscored the growing strategic partnership between India and Japan. The two countries agreed to deepen cooperation in defence, maritime security, economic security, advanced technology and critical infrastructure.
Several new initiatives were announced to strengthen collaboration in areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductor development, shipbuilding, biotechnology, green energy and resilient supply chains. The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to promoting a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific region based on international law.

Takaichi’s First Official Visit to India
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is on her first official visit to India since assuming office as Japan’s Prime Minister. During the joint press interaction, Prime Minister Modi warmly welcomed her and referred to her as his “younger sister,” describing her as a visionary leader. Takaichi responded positively, saying both leaders had agreed to further strengthen bilateral ties with the warmth and trust of a brother-sister relationship.
The symbolic exchange reflected the close diplomatic relationship that has developed between the two countries over the past decade and highlighted the personal rapport between the two leaders.
Focus on Regional and Global Security
India and Japan reiterated that terrorism remains one of the biggest threats to global peace and stability. They called upon all nations to fulfil their international obligations in combating terrorism without discrimination and emphasized the importance of holding states and individuals accountable for supporting or sponsoring terrorist activities.
The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation through regional and multilateral platforms while expanding defence collaboration and maritime security initiatives in the Indo-Pacific.
Expanding Economic and Technological Cooperation
Apart from security issues, the summit produced several agreements aimed at boosting economic engagement. India and Japan announced new cooperation in critical technologies, digital innovation, clean energy, healthcare, manufacturing and infrastructure development.
The two sides also agreed to intensify collaboration in economic security and resilient supply chains, reflecting their shared objective of reducing vulnerabilities in key sectors while promoting sustainable growth.
The summit concluded with both leaders expressing confidence that the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership will continue to expand across defence, trade, technology and regional security, while maintaining a united front against terrorism and violent extremism.
