KOLKATA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to West Bengal’s rich heritage and intellectual legacy on the occasion of Paschimbanga Divas, saying that whenever India searched for new ideas and a resurgence of thought, Bengal illuminated the path for the entire nation.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on June 20, the Prime Minister described West Bengal as one of India’s most influential states, whose contributions have shaped the country’s cultural, political, spiritual and intellectual foundations for generations.

He said Paschimbanga Divas is not merely a celebration of statehood but also a reminder of Bengal’s enduring role in India’s civilisational journey.

“When India Desired Intellectual Resurgence, West Bengal Gave Us…”

One of the most striking observations in the Prime Minister’s letter was his emphasis on Bengal’s role in India’s intellectual awakening.

He wrote that whenever India desired intellectual resurgence, West Bengal gave the nation scholars, philosophers, reformers and scientists who expanded the horizons of human understanding.

According to him, Bengal has consistently stood at the forefront of transformative ideas that changed the course of Indian history. Whether in literature, science, education, spirituality or social reform, Bengal produced some of the brightest minds whose influence transcended regional boundaries.

The Prime Minister said Bengal’s contributions have never been confined to the state alone; they have shaped the identity of modern India itself.

Bengal Renaissance Continues To Inspire India

Recalling the Bengal Renaissance of the nineteenth century, Modi said it transformed the consciousness of an entire nation. He described it as one of India’s most significant intellectual movements, responsible for inspiring generations of Indians to think beyond social limitations and embrace reform, education and innovation.

He stated that Bengal became synonymous with awakening and progress at a time when India needed a fresh vision for the future. The Prime Minister noted that Bengal’s thinkers and reformers laid the foundations for many of the values modern India proudly upholds today.

Vande Mataram: Bengal’s Gift To India’s Freedom Struggle

The Prime Minister also highlighted the historical significance of ‘Vande Mataram’, which emerged from Bengal and became one of the most powerful symbols of India’s freedom movement.

He noted that the country is commemorating 150 years of Vande Mataram and called it a timeless expression of devotion to the motherland.

Sharing a recent experience, Modi said he had witnessed singers in Slovakia perform the song beautifully, reflecting its growing international recognition and demonstrating how Bengal’s cultural contributions have travelled far beyond India’s borders.

Paschimbanga Divas And The Significance Of June 20

The Prime Minister explained why June 20 occupies a special place in Bengal’s history. He welcomed the state government’s decision to formally observe the day as Statehood Day, saying it would help younger generations understand the historical circumstances that shaped modern West Bengal.

According to him, June 20 symbolises a democratic decision that preserved Bengal’s linguistic, cultural and civilisational identity within India during a critical period before Independence. He said the day should serve as an occasion for remembrance, gratitude and historical awareness.

Tribute To Shyama Prasad Mukherjee

PM Modi also paid homage to Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, acknowledging his contribution during one of the most turbulent phases in India’s history. He said Mr. Mukherjee played a pivotal role in ensuring that the western districts remained an integral part of India during the Partition era.

The Prime Minister described his efforts as an important chapter in safeguarding Bengal’s identity and preserving its connection with the nation. He added that commemorating Paschimbanga Divas is also a tribute to democratic values, constitutional processes and the sacrifices made by countless families affected by Partition.

Vision For A New West Bengal

Beyond celebrating history, Modi used the occasion to outline his vision for the state’s future. He said West Bengal has immense untapped potential and can emerge as a major economic powerhouse if development remains the primary focus.

According to him, the state possesses natural advantages that can transform it into a centre for fisheries, manufacturing, food processing, tourism, textiles, port-led growth and the digital economy. He said Bengal’s strategic geographical location can further strengthen its role as a gateway for trade and connectivity.

Development Priorities For The State

The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of strengthening investor confidence, accelerating industrial growth and supporting small businesses. He called for improved logistics infrastructure and an environment where entrepreneurship can thrive without uncertainty.

Special attention, he said, should also be given to farmers through irrigation projects, crop diversification and better market access. He added that rural prosperity would eventually strengthen the entire state economy

Modernisation With Historic Status

Modi also highlighted the importance of modernising Kolkata while preserving its heritage. He said the city deserves infrastructure befitting its historical stature and global significance.

Urban transport, housing, drainage systems, roads, cleanliness and heritage-sensitive development, he noted, could help restore Kolkata’s position among Asia’s leading cities.

Shared Vision Towards Viksit Bharat 2047

Concluding his message, the Prime Minister urged the state government to establish short-term, medium-term and long-term development goals. He said such a structured approach would strengthen India’s collective mission of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

He expressed confidence that West Bengal would continue inspiring India with its wisdom, creativity and indomitable spirit, while preserving its glorious past and embracing future opportunities.
