A serving Indian Air Force Wing Commander has been arrested in a suspected espionage case after allegedly sharing sensitive defence information and classified documents with a Pakistani intelligence operative, Delhi Police said. Investigators suspect the officer was targeted through a social-media honey trap and may have been connected to a wider espionage network.
The 44-year-old officer was arrested on May 31, 2026, following inputs from the IAF’s intelligence wing. Police said a chargesheet in the case was submitted before the competent court on July 30. The officer has been booked under relevant provisions of the Official Secrets Act and is currently lodged in Tihar Jail.
The case has raised fresh concerns over attempts by hostile intelligence networks to exploit social media and personal vulnerabilities to obtain sensitive information related to India’s defence establishment.
IAF Officer Allegedly Honey-Trapped Through Social Media
According to investigators, the Wing Commander came into contact with a woman through a social-media platform earlier this year while he was reportedly experiencing difficulties in his personal life.
The interaction allegedly developed into regular conversations, including telephone calls and communication through a secure messaging application. Police suspect that the woman gradually gained the officer’s confidence before seeking information connected with India’s military and defence systems.
Investigators allege that the woman eventually persuaded the officer to provide sensitive material, including photographs, videos and confidential documents. Police are examining the nature and extent of the information allegedly transmitted through digital channels.
Authorities have not publicly identified either the officer or the woman involved in the alleged operation.
Defence Information Allegedly Shared Digitally
Police sources said the officer allegedly provided information concerning military activities, including details related to the movement and deployment of defence personnel and other sensitive aspects of India’s military infrastructure.
Investigators are now working to establish precisely what information was allegedly shared, how frequently it was transmitted and whether any of the material could have been used to compromise India’s national security.
The investigation is particularly focused on the possibility that the alleged information-sharing was not an isolated incident but part of a systematic effort to gather intelligence about India’s defence capabilities.
Delhi Police suspect that the woman who allegedly established contact with the Wing Commander could have been operating on behalf of Pakistan-based handlers. Investigators are attempting to determine her identity, her links with foreign operatives and whether other people were involved.
Suspected Spyware Attempt Raises Security Alarm
One of the more serious allegations in the case involves an application that the woman allegedly instructed the Wing Commander to install on a colleague’s mobile phone.
Investigators suspect that the application may have functioned as spyware or remote-access malware. Such software can potentially provide access to data stored on a device, track its location or expose communications.
Police are examining whether the alleged request was part of a broader attempt to gain access to information belonging to other defence personnel.
The development has added another layer to the investigation because it suggests that the alleged operation may have sought access beyond the information directly available to the Wing Commander.
IAF Intelligence Wing Flagged Suspicious Activities
The alleged espionage activities came to the attention of the IAF’s intelligence wing through electronic surveillance, according to officials.
After gathering information and evidence concerning the officer’s activities, the intelligence wing shared the details with the Delhi Police Special Cell. The officer was subsequently handed over to the police for legal action.
He was arrested on May 31 and questioned jointly by the Special Cell and central intelligence agencies. Following interrogation, he was produced before a court and subsequently sent to judicial custody.
Delhi Police later filed the chargesheet on July 30, marking a significant step in the investigation. Police have emphasised that the matter remains sub judice.
Probe Into Possible Pakistan-Based Espionage Network
Investigators believe the alleged honey-trap operation could be connected to a larger network involved in collecting intelligence concerning India’s defence establishment.

Officials are attempting to identify the handlers allegedly operating from Pakistan and establish whether they had targeted other military personnel through similar methods.

The alleged use of a digital application to target another defence officer’s mobile phone shows how such operations can combine psychological manipulation with technology.
For the Indian defence establishment, the incident underlines the importance of maintaining strict information-security protocols and ensuring that personnel remain alert to suspicious online contacts.
The Wing Commander’s arrest and the filing of the chargesheet represent the latest developments in the case. However, investigators are continuing to determine the full scale of the alleged information leak and whether the suspected Pakistan-linked network involved additional operatives.
