NEW DELHI: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has expressed serious concern over the reported arrests and detention of students and protesters in several states, including West Bengal, Bihar and Assam, despite what it claims was an assurance from the Central Government that no punitive action would be taken against those who participated in the recent nationwide NEET protest movement.
CJP questions police action
In a statement issued on Monday, the organisation said it had suspended its nationwide agitation only after receiving commitments from the Centre regarding the treatment of protesters. According to CJP leaders, recent reports of arrests, detentions and registration of First Information Reports (FIRs) against students have raised serious doubts about whether those assurances are being honoured.
The group alleged that students and supporters have continued to face police action in multiple states even after the protest movement was called off. It maintained that such actions undermine trust between the government and protesters and could discourage democratic participation.
Demand for immediate withdrawal of FIRs
CJP has demanded that all FIRs registered against peaceful protesters be withdrawn immediately and that those detained during demonstrations be released without delay. The organisation argued that students who participated in protests should not face criminal proceedings if they exercised their democratic right to voice concerns over examination irregularities.
The organisation said that continuing legal action against protesters would amount to a breach of the understanding reached during discussions with the government. It urged both the Centre and the concerned state governments to ensure that no student is subjected to unnecessary legal harassment.

According to CJP, reports of police action have emerged from West Bengal, Bihar and Assam. The organisation said it has received information about students being detained and criminal cases being filed in connection with demonstrations linked to the NEET examination controversy.

CJP leaders warned that if the FIRs are not withdrawn and detained protesters are not released, the organisation may be compelled to resume its protest campaign.
