NEW DELHI: In a shocking revelation that has raised serious concerns about child safety and illegal adoption networks in India, Delhi Police have dismantled an inter-state child trafficking racket suspected of selling more than 30 infants across several states over the past few years. Authorities have arrested 13 people so far and rescued five infants, while investigations continue to identify dozens of couples who may have purchased babies through the illegal network.
A Vigilant Citizen’s Alert Triggered The Investigation
The operation reportedly began after an alert resident noticed suspicious behaviour involving a woman carrying different infants at separate times in central Delhi. The unusual pattern prompted a police complaint, which eventually led investigators to a larger organised syndicate operating across state boundaries.
Police launched an undercover operation that lasted nearly two weeks. Officers posed as prospective buyers and managed to establish contact with members of the trafficking network. During one such operation, they intercepted an attempt to sell a newborn infant just a few days after birth.
Five Infants Rescued During Raids
Authorities rescued five infants ranging in age from five days to four months from different locations spread across multiple states. The children were subsequently produced before child welfare authorities for protection and rehabilitation.
According to investigators, four of the rescued babies belonged to tribal communities, while another child was traced back to Delhi. Officials have prioritised ensuring the infants receive immediate medical care and legal protection.
Network Spanned Multiple States
The police investigation uncovered an extensive network operating across Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The syndicate allegedly consisted of suppliers, transporters, middlemen, facilitators, medical professionals and prospective buyers.
Investigators believe financially vulnerable families were often targeted, with traffickers offering money in exchange for newborn babies. In some cases, infants were allegedly transported from rural areas into Delhi before being sold to childless couples seeking children outside legal adoption channels.
Doctor And Hospital Under Scanner
One of the most alarming findings of the investigation is the alleged involvement of a doctor and a Delhi-based hospital.
Police suspect that a multispeciality hospital in Delhi was used as an operational hub where potential buyers were identified, especially among couples undergoing fertility treatments. Investigators allege that forged birth certificates, fabricated pregnancy records and fake medical documentation were prepared to make illegal adoptions appear legitimate.
Officials believe this enabled trafficked infants to be integrated into families without raising immediate suspicion.
More Than 30 Infants May Have Been Sold
Authorities suspect the syndicate may have trafficked over 30 infants during the past one to two years, although the actual number could be higher as investigations expand. Police are now examining records and tracing couples who may have illegally purchased babies from the network.
Several digital records, financial transactions and communication channels are being analysed to understand the full extent of the operation.
Mastermind Supplier Arrested
Police tracked down one of the alleged key suppliers after technical surveillance and extensive interstate coordination. Investigators believe he sourced newborn babies from vulnerable communities in Rajasthan and Gujarat before supplying them to the syndicate.
Officials said the arrest could provide crucial information regarding the identities of additional accomplices and buyers involved in the illegal trade.
Illegal Adoption Demand Driving Criminal Networks
Experts say the case highlights a growing concern surrounding illegal adoption markets that prey on emotionally vulnerable and childless couples unwilling to wait for lengthy legal adoption procedures.
Instead of following regulated adoption systems, some families allegedly turned to illegal channels that promised quicker access to newborn infants, inadvertently fuelling organised crime.
Authorities emphasised that legal adoption remains the only safe and lawful pathway for prospective parents.
Investigation Expands Across India
Delhi Police have indicated that the probe is far from over. Multiple teams are coordinating with authorities in other states to identify every child that may have been trafficked through the network.
Officials are also examining potential lapses within healthcare institutions and registration systems that allowed forged documentation to go unnoticed for an extended period.
The case has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger oversight mechanisms, stricter monitoring of hospitals and enhanced protection for vulnerable families and children across India.
