New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday underscored the growing importance of BRICS in addressing modern security challenges, saying the grouping has a critical role to play in building a safer, more secure and inclusive world amid rapidly changing global dynamics.

Welcoming National Security Advisers and senior security officials from BRICS member nations, PM Modi highlighted India’s commitment to strengthening practical cooperation during its 2026 chairmanship of the bloc.

“Pleased to meet National Security Advisors and senior security officials of BRICS countries. In a changing global landscape, BRICS has a vital role in deepening security cooperation and addressing shared challenges, from terrorism and cyber security to emerging technologies. India’s Chairmanship will seek to advance practical cooperation, support the priorities of the Global South and contribute to a safer, more secure and inclusive world,” the Prime Minister said.

The high-level BRICS National Security Advisers’ Meeting, held in New Delhi on June 22 and 23 under India’s chairmanship, was chaired by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. The gathering brought together senior security representatives from all BRICS member countries to deliberate on emerging global threats and strengthen strategic cooperation among member nations.

The central theme of the discussions was “Non-traditional security challenges confronting the world today.” The deliberations focused on how evolving technologies and complex geopolitical developments are reshaping global security frameworks.

Areas Discussed During The Meeting

Counter-Terrorism Cooperation

Delegates reviewed existing mechanisms to enhance intelligence sharing, disrupt terror financing networks and strengthen collective efforts against cross-border terrorism. The meeting also examined the outcomes of BRICS Joint Working Groups dedicated to counter-terrorism cooperation.

Cyber Security And Information Protection

With cyberattacks becoming increasingly sophisticated, member nations discussed collaborative approaches to improve cyber resilience, secure digital infrastructure and establish common frameworks for information security. Officials also reviewed cooperation relating to the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).

Emerging Technologies And Artificial Intelligence

The rapid rise of artificial intelligence, digital technologies and data-driven systems was identified as both an opportunity and a potential security concern. Discussions centred around creating safeguards to ensure responsible use of emerging technologies while minimising associated risks.

Strengthening The Voice Of Global South

India reiterated its intention to use its BRICS chairmanship to promote the interests and developmental priorities of countries in the Global South. New Delhi emphasised inclusive growth, equitable global governance and greater representation for developing nations in international decision-making institutions.

The meeting assumes added significance as India is holding the BRICS chairship for the fourth time after previous tenures in 2012, 2016 and 2021. India’s 2026 presidency is being guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” This vision reflects a people-centric and humanity-first approach that India has consistently advocated in multilateral platforms.

Over the years, BRICS has evolved from an economic partnership into a broader geopolitical platform that addresses a wide spectrum of issues ranging from security and finance to climate change, energy security, trade and technological cooperation. The expanded grouping now represents major emerging economies and seeks to provide greater balance in global governance structures.

The New Delhi meeting also served as an important preparatory platform ahead of the upcoming BRICS Summit that India will host later this year. Senior officials discussed ways to institutionalise cooperation and build consensus on pressing global challenges that increasingly transcend national boundaries.

Against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions, cyber threats, conflicts in different regions and rapid technological disruption, India used the opportunity to position BRICS as a forum capable of delivering practical and long-term solutions.

By bringing together major emerging economies under a shared agenda, India aims to strengthen collective responses to modern security threats while ensuring that the concerns of developing nations remain at the centre of global policymaking.

PM Modi’s message reinforced India’s belief that international security today requires collaborative action, technological preparedness and inclusive partnerships that benefit all nations rather than a select few.
