GHAZIABAD: India’s para-sports community has been left in shock after the death of national-level para-athlete Chirag Tyagi, who was allegedly shot dead in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad just days after securing a major international qualification.
The 24-year-old athlete had recently emerged as one of India’s brightest para-athletics talents after winning the gold medal in the 400-metre event at the National Para Athletics Championship held in Bengaluru. His performance also earned him a place in the upcoming Para Asian Games scheduled to be held in Japan later this year.
According to police officials, Tyagi’s body was discovered in the Sai Kunj-Sai Upvan area of Ghaziabad with a gunshot injury. Preliminary investigations suggested foul play, prompting authorities to launch a detailed probe into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Tyagi, a resident of Basantpur Sethli village in the Muradnagar region of Ghaziabad, had reportedly returned from a training camp in Pune shortly before the incident. Family members said he had informed them that he would reach home in the afternoon, but his phone later became unreachable, leading to growing concern. Police subsequently informed the family about the tragic development.
Investigators later detained and arrested a fellow para-athlete who had reportedly known Tyagi for nearly a decade. Police believe the accused and the victim had trained together in the past and were active competitors in para-athletics circuits. CCTV footage and other evidence reportedly helped authorities identify the suspect.
Early findings indicate that the murder may have stemmed from a personal rivalry linked to sports eligibility and competition. Investigators said the accused allegedly blamed Tyagi for raising objections regarding his documents during a verification process, which reportedly affected his participation in a sporting event. Authorities suspect the killing was carried out as an act of revenge.
Police are continuing their investigation and are also trying to recover the weapon used in the crime. Officials have not ruled out the possibility that others may have assisted in the planning or execution of the murder.
Tyagi’s death has triggered widespread grief among athletes, coaches and sports enthusiasts. Many in the para-sports fraternity viewed him as a rising star capable of bringing international honours to India. His recent gold-medal performance had strengthened hopes of a strong showing at the Para Asian Games, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking.
As tributes pour in from across the country, the incident has also raised concerns about disputes and pressures within competitive sports. For many, the loss of a young athlete on the verge of representing India at a major international event marks not only a personal tragedy but also a significant setback for Indian para-athletics.
The investigation remains ongoing, with police expected to file additional charges once forensic and technical evidence is fully examined.
