KOLKATA: West Bengal is set to witness one of its biggest railway infrastructure expansions in recent years after Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari jointly announced a series of major rail and metro projects aimed at transforming connectivity across the state. The announcements were made following a high-level review meeting in Kolkata, where both leaders discussed stalled projects, future investments, and land acquisition issues that have long affected railway development in Bengal.
A key highlight of the announcement was the proposed high-speed rail corridor connecting Delhi and Siliguri. According to the Railway Ministry, the bullet train project is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two destinations, bringing it down to nearly six hours. The project is being projected as a major boost for economic activity, tourism, and regional integration in eastern India.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Suvendu Adhikari said that railway infrastructure projects worth more than ₹1 lakh crore are expected to be implemented across West Bengal. He emphasized that the state government would extend full cooperation to the Railways, including support in land acquisition wherever required. He also stated that improved coordination between the Centre and the state would help accelerate long-pending projects that had faced delays in previous years.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the Centre’s commitment to strengthening Bengal’s rail network. He noted that thousands of crores have already been allocated for railway development in the state and that several ongoing projects are now being fast-tracked. Earlier this year, the Railway Ministry announced an allocation of ₹14,205 crore for West Bengal, one of the highest railway budgets received by the state in recent years.
Apart from the bullet train proposal, the plans include extensive upgrades to railway stations, expansion of metro connectivity, construction of rail overbridges, underpasses, and new railway lines aimed at connecting underserved regions. Officials indicated that more than 100 stations in Bengal are expected to be modernised under various railway development schemes.
The meeting also focused on resolving issues that had delayed several railway projects in the past, particularly land-related disputes. Vaishnaw has previously maintained that many projects were held up because of insufficient cooperation on land acquisition. The latest discussions signalled a fresh effort to remove those hurdles and ensure faster implementation of infrastructure works.
Officials said the development roadmap covers North Bengal, South Bengal and the Jangalmahal region. Several districts that currently have limited railway connectivity are expected to be brought onto the railway map through new lines and network extensions. Improved connectivity is expected to benefit commuters, businesses, agricultural producers and tourism operators across the state.
The Railway Ministry has already approved several projects in recent months, including new train services, rail line surveys, and capacity enhancement works in strategically important corridors. These projects are intended to ease congestion, improve passenger movement and strengthen links with neighbouring states and the Northeast.
The announcements come amid a broader push by the Centre to expand railway and metro infrastructure across the country. For Bengal, the proposed investments are expected to create employment opportunities, stimulate economic growth and improve transportation efficiency. If implemented on schedule, the projects could reshape the state’s transport landscape over the next decade.
The proposed bullet train corridor and large-scale railway modernisation plans have already generated significant interest among residents and industry stakeholders. Authorities are expected to release more detailed timelines and project plans in the coming months as implementation moves forward.
