Adani Enterprises has joined hands with Abu Dhabi-based International Holding Company (IHC) to establish a massive integrated aluminium project in Odisha with a proposed investment of ₹1.08 lakh crore. The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Odisha government, marking one of the largest foreign-backed investments in India’s metals sector.

The project is expected to significantly expand India’s aluminium production capacity while supporting the country’s long-term industrial growth. It also reinforces Odisha’s position as India’s leading aluminium-producing state due to its abundant bauxite reserves.

Equal Partnership Between Adani and IHC

Under the agreement, Adani Enterprises and IHC will each hold a 50% stake in the joint venture. The collaboration reflects the growing economic partnership between India and the United Arab Emirates, particularly in strategic sectors such as mining, manufacturing and infrastructure.

The integrated complex will include an alumina refinery, an aluminium smelter, a captive power plant and a downstream aluminium manufacturing park. Once completed, it is expected to become Odisha’s largest aluminium production facility.

Large Production Capacity Planned

The proposed facility has been designed with substantial production capabilities. It is expected to produce around 4 million tonnes of alumina annually, along with 2 million tonnes of aluminium. In addition, downstream manufacturing facilities capable of producing 1 million tonnes of aluminium products each year are planned as part of the project.

The downstream manufacturing park is expected to add value by producing finished aluminium products for sectors including infrastructure, transportation, renewable energy, electrical equipment and industrial manufacturing.

Major Boost for Odisha’s Economy

The investment is expected to generate significant economic activity in Odisha. Officials estimate that the project will create approximately 53,500 employment opportunities, including around 35,000 jobs during the construction phase and another 18,500 permanent positions after commercial operations begin.

Apart from direct employment, the project is expected to stimulate local businesses, logistics, transportation, engineering services and supporting industries across the state.

Odisha already accounts for more than half of India’s aluminium production due to its rich deposits of bauxite, the primary raw material used in aluminium manufacturing. The new investment is expected to further strengthen the state’s leadership in the sector.

Supports India’s Manufacturing Goals

India has been focusing on expanding domestic aluminium production to meet rising demand from infrastructure development, power transmission, electric mobility, transportation and renewable energy projects.

According to recent government projections, domestic aluminium demand is expected to increase significantly over the coming years. The proposed integrated project aligns with the country’s strategy to reduce dependence on imports of value-added aluminium products while enhancing domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Industry experts believe the additional production capacity could substantially increase India’s overall aluminium output and strengthen its position in the global metals market.

Adani Expands Presence in Metals

The aluminium venture marks another significant milestone in Adani Group’s growing presence in the metals business. While the group has already established a major copper smelter in Gujarat, this project represents its formal entry into large-scale aluminium manufacturing.

The investment also complements Adani’s broader strategy of building integrated infrastructure businesses spanning energy, ports, logistics, mining and industrial manufacturing.

The group had previously announced investments in alumina refining projects in Odisha, and the latest partnership with IHC considerably expands the scale of its ambitions in the state.

Strengthening India-UAE Economic Cooperation

The partnership highlights the growing investment relationship between India and the UAE. IHC has previously invested in several Adani Group businesses, and this latest collaboration further deepens bilateral economic ties.

The aluminium project is expected to contribute to industrial development, improve supply chain resilience and support India’s long-term manufacturing ambitions under its broader economic growth strategy.

Once operational, the integrated aluminium complex is expected to emerge as one of India’s largest metals manufacturing hubs, enhancing production capacity, generating employment and reinforcing Odisha’s status as a key destination for large-scale industrial investments.
