Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari flagged off Porter’s 10,000th electric truck in Delhi, marking a major milestone in India’s transition towards cleaner and technology-driven urban freight transportation.
The milestone highlights the growing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in India’s logistics sector, where reducing fuel consumption, emissions and inefficient vehicle utilisation has become an increasingly important priority.
Nitin Gadkari Backs Electric Mobility in Freight Sector
Gadkari, who attended the event as the chief guest, said India’s electric mobility ecosystem has made considerable progress over the past decade. He stressed that the next five to 10 years would be crucial for accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles.
According to Gadkari, continued policy support, stronger charging infrastructure and technological innovation can help make EVs more affordable, safe and accessible. He also emphasised the opportunity for India to strengthen its position as a global centre for electric vehicle manufacturing and exports.
The flag-off of Porter’s 10,000th electric truck comes as the government continues to promote cleaner transportation and more efficient logistics under initiatives such as PM Gati Shakti and the National Logistics Policy.
Porter Expands Electric Truck Fleet
Porter’s latest milestone reflects its expanding focus on electric freight vehicles. The company said its technology platform is also designed to improve vehicle utilisation by matching transportation demand with available vehicles, thereby reducing unnecessary empty journeys.
Porter claims that its operations have eliminated around 185 crore kilometres of empty runs, contributing to savings of more than ₹1,000 crore in fuel imports for the country.
The company currently sees more than 50,000 electric vehicles operating on its platform every month and has set an ambitious target of quadrupling that figure over the next five years.
The company believes combining electrification with digital technology can help create a more efficient urban freight network while reducing the environmental impact associated with conventional fuel-powered transportation.
Porter CEO Highlights Challenges Ahead
Porter Co-Founder and CEO Uttam Digga described the 10,000-electric-truck milestone as an important stage in the company’s development.
Digga said electric trucks could become a significant component of India’s transition towards cleaner freight movement. However, he noted that large-scale adoption would require solutions addressing practical challenges faced by freight operators.
These include vehicle economics, charging infrastructure, financing and effective utilisation of electric vehicles. He also stressed that simply deploying electric vehicles is not enough and that their productive utilisation on roads will be equally important.
According to Digga, Porter aims to contribute to India’s long-term development ambitions while supporting the transition towards more sustainable transportation.
Collaboration Driving India’s EV Freight Revolution
Porter Co-Founder and Executive Vice Chairman Pranav Goel said reaching the 10,000-electric-truck milestone was the result of cooperation between driver-partners, vehicle manufacturers, EV infrastructure providers and policymakers.
Goel said the company now intends to accelerate the momentum around electric freight transportation. He described the transition as more than an environmental initiative, arguing that greater efficiency and sustainability can also support improved opportunities and earnings for driver-partners.
The company sees collaboration across the electric mobility ecosystem as essential for building a commercially viable and sustainable freight network.
Industry Leaders Discuss Future of Green Logistics
The event also featured a panel discussion titled “The Future of Green Logistics: Electrification and Asset Utilisation.”
The session was moderated by Pawan Mulukutla, Executive Program Director for Integrated Transport, Clean Air and Hydrogen at WRI India.
Participants included Porter CEO Uttam Digga, Euler Motors Founder and CEO Saurav Kumar, and Battery Smart Co-Founder Pulkit Khurana.
The discussion examined ways to accelerate electric freight adoption and strengthen India’s charging and battery-swapping infrastructure. Industry leaders also discussed the role of digital technology in improving fleet productivity.
Another key issue was the dual utilisation of commercial vehicles, which could potentially improve asset efficiency while helping reduce congestion and unnecessary vehicle movement in cities.
Green Logistics Gains Importance
India’s rapidly expanding urban economy has increased demand for reliable last-mile and intra-city goods transportation. At the same time, concerns over fuel consumption, congestion and emissions have increased pressure on logistics companies to adopt cleaner and more efficient solutions.
Porter said it currently serves more than 40 lakh MSMEs and 6 lakh driver-partners every month across 50 cities.
Founded in 2014, the company operates across several segments of the goods transportation market, including intra-city transportation using trucks, tempos, electric vehicles and two-wheelers, along with Packers & Movers services.
With a workforce of around 1,800 employees, Porter has focused on using technology to connect businesses with transportation services and improve operational efficiency.
