Putin Defies Trump? Zelensky Accuses Russia of Breaking Energy Ceasefire, 6 Facilities Hit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky alleges Russian attacks continued within hours of Donald Trump’s ceasefire announcement, raising fresh doubts over Washington’s efforts to halt strikes on critical energy infrastructure.

Russia-Ukraine War: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Moscow of violating a proposed energy ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump after Russian strikes reportedly hit at least six energy facilities across Ukraine. The allegations have intensified concerns over the prospects of a diplomatic breakthrough in the more than four-year-long war.

Trump announced on Sunday, October 11, that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to stop attacking each other’s energy infrastructure with immediate effect. However, the situation on the ground appeared to contradict the announcement, as Ukrainian officials reported further Russian attacks on energy installations and civilian areas.

The latest developments have raised questions about whether a mutually accepted agreement was actually in place and whether Washington can persuade both sides to comply with a temporary halt to attacks.

Zelensky Accuses Russia of Defying Trump’s Ceasefire

Speaking on Monday, October 12, Zelensky said Russian forces continued targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure despite the US president’s announcement. He argued that Moscow’s actions demonstrated a lack of willingness to respect the proposed arrangement.

According to the Ukrainian leader, Russian forces struck six energy facilities, including installations connected to the country’s power and gas infrastructure. The reported attacks came as Kyiv signalled its readiness to suspend strikes against Russian energy targets if Moscow reciprocated.

Zelensky urged the United States to take concrete steps to ensure that Russia respected the proposed ceasefire rather than allowing the announcement to remain a diplomatic declaration without practical consequences.

He also indicated that Ukraine would respond if Russian attacks continued. His remarks underscored Kyiv’s position that any arrangement to protect energy infrastructure must be reciprocal and enforceable.

Trump Announces Immediate Energy Ceasefire

Trump announced the proposed truce through a social media post, stating that both Russia and Ukraine had agreed to halt attacks on energy facilities. He said the arrangement would take effect immediately and warned the two countries against violating it.

However, the announcement created uncertainty because the details of the alleged agreement were not made public and neither side had clearly confirmed a mutually agreed set of conditions.

Zelensky initially said the announcement was news to him, while indicating that Ukraine would be prepared to participate if Russia genuinely accepted the arrangement.

The uncertainty has become a significant obstacle to assessing whether the ceasefire represents a meaningful diplomatic initiative or an understanding that still requires negotiations between the parties.

The White House’s efforts come amid continuing international pressure to reduce the intensity of the war and prevent further damage to infrastructure that millions of people depend on for electricity, heating and other essential services.

Critical Energy Infrastructure Remains Under Threat

Energy facilities have repeatedly become targets during the conflict, leaving Ukraine vulnerable to disruptions in electricity supplies, gas production and other essential services.

Damage to power stations, gas installations and distribution networks can have consequences far beyond the immediate battlefield. It can disrupt businesses, affect hospitals and public services, and leave households without reliable electricity or heating.

The latest reported strikes are particularly concerning as Ukraine faces the prospect of colder weather, when energy demand typically rises and the reliability of heating systems becomes increasingly important.

Ukrainian officials have repeatedly warned that attacks on energy infrastructure place additional pressure on the country’s already strained energy system.

A genuine energy ceasefire could offer temporary relief by reducing the risk of further damage to essential facilities. However, without clear terms, verification mechanisms and compliance by both parties, the arrangement faces significant challenges.

Moscow Signals No Immediate End to Military Campaign

Russia has not publicly confirmed the existence of a fully agreed energy ceasefire under the terms described by Trump. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said discussions concerning a possible arrangement were continuing, while rejecting Zelensky’s proposal for a broader 60-day ceasefire.

Russian officials have maintained that Moscow seeks a longer-term settlement rather than a temporary pause in hostilities. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also indicated that Russia intended to continue pursuing its stated military objectives in Ukraine.

The difference between Washington’s announcement and Moscow’s public position has left the proposed truce surrounded by uncertainty.

European leaders have also expressed doubts about whether the arrangement had taken effect. French President Emmanuel Macron said he had not observed evidence of an energy ceasefire being implemented by Russia, while Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk called for continued pressure on Moscow.

EU Expands Sanctions Against Russia

The diplomatic tensions coincided with a significant European Union move to expand sanctions against Russia’s military-industrial complex.

The bloc announced nearly 1,600 additional sanctions listings involving individuals and entities connected to Russia’s war effort. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the measures were intended to make it harder and more expensive for Moscow to manufacture weapons used against Ukraine.

The sanctions announcement highlighted the continuing divide between Western efforts to pressure Russia and the possibility of negotiating a temporary reduction in attacks.

European governments have continued supporting Ukraine while insisting that any meaningful peace initiative must be accompanied by verifiable steps to reduce hostilities.

Can Trump’s Initiative Prevent Further Escalation?

The reported attacks have placed fresh scrutiny on Trump’s attempts to broker an end to the conflict. His announcement came amid rising tensions between Washington and Kyiv over Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil facilities and a separate US move involving Russian diesel exports.

Zelensky has argued that Ukraine is prepared to halt attacks on Russian energy infrastructure if Moscow stops targeting Ukrainian facilities. He has also called for stronger American involvement to ensure that both sides honour any agreement.

For Kyiv, the immediate priority remains protecting critical infrastructure and preventing further damage to its energy network. For Washington, the challenge is translating a public announcement into a workable arrangement accepted and observed by both countries.

Whether the proposed energy ceasefire can survive the latest accusations will depend on further diplomatic engagement, clarity over its terms and evidence that attacks are actually stopping.

For now, Zelensky’s allegations that six energy facilities were hit have cast a shadow over Trump’s announcement and highlighted the continuing difficulty of securing even a limited pause in the Russia-Ukraine war.
