Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completed 25 years at the helm of government, marking a remarkable political journey that began with his appointment as Gujarat Chief Minister on October 7, 2001, and continued with three consecutive terms as Prime Minister of India since 2014. The milestone has prompted congratulatory messages from BJP leaders, NDA allies and political figures abroad, who highlighted his long public-service record, governance approach and India’s expanding global presence.
The occasion marks a quarter-century of uninterrupted leadership at the head of an elected government. Modi’s journey from Gujarat to New Delhi has made him one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Indian politics, with his supporters pointing to continuity in governance, development-focused policies and a strong emphasis on national interests.
From Gujarat Chief Minister to Prime Minister
Modi assumed office as Gujarat Chief Minister on October 7, 2001. He remained in the state’s top political position for more than 12 years before moving to national politics in 2014.
After leading the Bharatiya Janata Party to victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Modi became Prime Minister. He subsequently secured two more mandates in 2019 and 2024, allowing him to continue at the Centre for three consecutive terms.
The Union Cabinet, ahead of the anniversary, adopted a resolution recognising Modi’s 25 years of continuous leadership. The resolution described the journey as being guided by the principles of “Nation First” and “Citizen First” and attributed the longevity of his political leadership to sustained public confidence.
Leaders Praise Modi’s Long Political Journey
Union ministers and BJP leaders described the milestone as significant for Indian politics. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Modi’s understanding of politics goes beyond simply forming governments, portraying his approach as centred on public service and governance.
Chief ministers and NDA leaders also extended their greetings, pointing to what they described as Modi’s commitment to development, public service and national interests. Several leaders characterised the 25-year journey as an extraordinary political achievement and a reflection of the trust placed in him by voters.
The milestone also drew messages from international leaders. Prime ministers and political figures from countries including Japan, Belgium, Dominica and Nigeria congratulated Modi, underlining the importance of India’s bilateral relationships and its growing international engagement.
Governance Model and Major Initiatives
The Union Cabinet’s resolution highlighted several initiatives associated with Modi’s years in government. It pointed to governance experiments from Gujarat, including SWAGAT and Jyotigram, which were later reflected in national-level approaches to administration and development.

At the national level, the government has highlighted initiatives involving financial inclusion, welfare delivery, infrastructure development, digital payments, manufacturing, renewable energy and technological growth.
The Cabinet resolution also cited programmes such as Jan Dhan, PM-KISAN and housing initiatives, while pointing to developments in highways, railways, defence production and electronics manufacturing. It also highlighted scientific achievements including India’s Covid-19 vaccine programme and Chandrayaan-3.
Modi Marks Milestone With Message of Gratitude
On Wednesday, Modi marked the occasion by offering prayers at Shri Vinayak Mandir in New Delhi. He said he prayed for the happiness, prosperity and good health of the people of India and renewed his commitment to serving the country.

Addressing a public programme marking his 25 years in government, Modi expressed gratitude to citizens, party workers and colleagues, saying that the milestone was ultimately a reflection of the trust placed in him by the people. He also acknowledged that both supporters and critics had contributed to his political learning.
Rather than presenting the anniversary as an endpoint, Modi linked it to India’s future ambitions. He reiterated the goal of building a developed India by 2047 and called for continued national effort toward that objective.
A Defining Chapter in Indian Politics
Modi’s 25-year journey as the head of a government represents one of the longest continuous periods of elected executive leadership in India’s political history. From Gujarat’s state administration to the country’s highest elected executive office, his career has been marked by electoral victories, policy expansion and an increasingly prominent international profile.
As the milestone is being observed through programmes and public events across the country, supporters are presenting the occasion as a celebration of governance and public service. For Modi, however, the anniversary has been framed less as a moment to look back and more as a renewed commitment to the country’s development journey.
With the focus now shifting toward the 2047 vision, the completion of 25 years marks both a historic political milestone and the beginning of another chapter in Modi’s long-running public life.
