NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday welcomed Germany’s decision to operationalise visa-free airport transit for Indian nationals, describing the move as a significant step towards strengthening people-to-people exchanges and easing international travel for Indian citizens. The new arrangement comes into effect from June 3, 2026, and removes the requirement for Indian travellers to obtain an airport transit visa while passing through German airports on their way to third countries.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it welcomed Germany’s implementation of the earlier announcement to waive the airport transit visa requirement for Indian nationals travelling exclusively by air through German airports. According to German authorities, the decision was formally notified in Germany’s Federal Law Gazette on June 2 and became effective the following day.

The German Embassy in New Delhi stated that the measure is part of Berlin’s efforts to deepen ties with India, facilitate the movement of people, and further strengthen economic and social connections between the two countries. The embassy noted that the decision fulfils a commitment made during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India in January this year.

The visa exemption is expected to benefit thousands of Indian travellers, including students, professionals, businesspersons and tourists, who frequently use major German aviation hubs such as Frankfurt and Munich while travelling to destinations across Europe, North America and other regions. By removing the transit visa requirement, passengers can avoid additional paperwork, costs and waiting periods associated with obtaining a transit permit.

However, authorities clarified that the new rule applies only to airport transit. It does not grant visa-free entry into Germany or the wider Schengen area. Indian travellers who intend to leave the airport transit zone, enter Germany, or stay in the country will still need the appropriate visa under existing regulations.

The development follows growing cooperation between India and Germany across several sectors, including trade, technology, renewable energy, education and mobility. During Chancellor Merz’s January visit, the two countries announced a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing bilateral engagement and facilitating greater exchanges between their citizens.

The move also aligns Germany with a broader trend of easing transit requirements for Indian travellers. Earlier this year, France introduced a similar visa-free airport transit facility for Indian nationals travelling through French airports to third countries, a decision that was also welcomed by New Delhi.

Officials believe the latest measure will make international travel more convenient for Indian passport holders while reinforcing the growing partnership between India and Germany. As air connectivity and business exchanges continue to expand, the visa-free transit facility is expected to further boost mobility and strengthen bilateral relations.
