A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia early Saturday, triggering widespread panic, damaging buildings and prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for several coastal regions. The powerful tremor struck off the coast of East Nusa Tenggara, near the Flores region, as residents were beginning their day.
According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake occurred at around 4:58 a.m. local time at a depth of approximately 15 kilometres, making it a relatively shallow and potentially more damaging earthquake.
The earthquake was followed by multiple aftershocks, including strong tremors that intensified fear among residents already shaken by the initial quake.
Five Reported Dead as Buildings Collapse
The earthquake has caused fatalities and injuries, although official casualty figures have varied as emergency teams continue assessing affected areas.
India Today reported that at least five people were killed following the earthquake, while other official preliminary reports initially placed the death toll lower. East Nusa Tenggara Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena said five people died after rubble reportedly fell on them while they were sleeping.
Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency, however, initially reported one death and four injuries, highlighting the rapidly changing nature of the casualty assessment. Search-and-rescue teams have continued operations in affected areas, raising concerns that the number of casualties could change as damaged buildings are inspected.
Reports and footage from the affected region showed damaged structures, collapsed sections of buildings and residents fleeing into open areas for safety.
Tsunami Warning Sparks Coastal Evacuations
The powerful earthquake immediately raised fears of a tsunami because of its offshore location and shallow depth.
BMKG issued an early tsunami warning covering vulnerable coastal areas in East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and parts of South Sulawesi. Authorities urged residents in coastal communities to move away from beaches and seek safer locations.
The warning was later lifted after monitoring stations detected only relatively small tsunami waves. Waves of less than one metre were recorded in several areas. BMKG eventually ended the tsunami warning several hours after the earthquake.
Despite the cancellation of the warning, Indonesia’s disaster authorities continued urging people to stay away from beaches until further instructions because aftershocks remained possible.
Strong Aftershocks Shake Flores Region
The main earthquake was followed by several significant aftershocks, keeping residents on edge.
Indonesia’s disaster agency reported that two magnitude 6.2 aftershocks occurred shortly after the main earthquake, while other seismic monitoring reports recorded additional strong tremors in the region.
The shaking was reportedly felt across parts of East Nusa Tenggara, including Nagekeo, Sikka and West Manggarai. Tremors were also felt in parts of West Nusa Tenggara and South Sulawesi.
Residents described intense shaking lasting for a considerable period, with people rushing outside buildings amid fears that structures could collapse.
Emergency Response Intensifies
Search-and-rescue teams have been deployed to inspect damaged structures, evacuate vulnerable residents and provide medical assistance to those injured.
Authorities have also warned residents to avoid entering buildings with visible cracks or structural damage. Emergency officials have stressed the importance of following instructions from local authorities, particularly as aftershocks continue.

In some affected areas, power outages and damage to infrastructure complicated the emergency response. Hospitals and medical facilities in parts of the region also took precautionary measures, including moving patients to safer locations in response to concerns over structural stability.
Around 2,000 people in Nagekeo were reported to have evacuated their homes, while emergency services continued assessing the wider impact of the earthquake.
Indonesia Remains Highly Vulnerable to Earthquakes
Indonesia is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries because it lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an extensive zone of tectonic activity surrounding the Pacific Ocean.
The country frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic eruptions because several major tectonic plates meet beneath and around the Indonesian archipelago.
Saturday’s earthquake once again highlighted the danger faced by communities living along Indonesia’s extensive coastline. The combination of a shallow offshore earthquake, strong aftershocks and the possibility of tsunami waves prompted authorities to respond rapidly.
Tsunami Alert Lifted, But Vigilance Urged
Although the immediate tsunami threat has passed and the warning has been withdrawn, Indonesian authorities continue to urge caution.
Residents have been advised to remain calm, stay away from damaged structures and avoid coastal areas until officials determine that it is safe to return. Emergency agencies are continuing to monitor aftershocks and inspect affected communities.
The 7.7-magnitude Indonesia earthquake has left parts of eastern Indonesia dealing with deaths, injuries, structural damage and significant public anxiety. With rescue and assessment operations still underway, authorities are expected to provide further updates as the full extent of the destruction becomes clearer.
