A major Ukrainian drone attack struck the Russian city of Nizhnekamsk in the Tatarstan region on Monday, August 10, killing at least 13 people and injuring dozens, according to Russian officials and international reports. The attack targeted industrial infrastructure, including the TANECO oil refinery, while nearby civilian areas were also affected.
The strike represents a significant escalation in Ukraine’s campaign against Russian energy infrastructure. Nizhnekamsk is located roughly 800 kilometres east of Moscow, placing the target deep inside Russian territory and far from the immediate battlefront.
The casualties have made the attack one of the deadliest recent incidents involving civilians inside Russia. Russian authorities initially reported 12 deaths and 39 injuries, while later updates raised the death toll to 13. A child was among those killed, according to Russian officials cited by Reuters.
TANECO Oil Refinery Reportedly Targeted
Ukraine’s military said its forces had struck the TANECO oil refinery, operated by Russian oil company Tatneft. The facility is considered an important part of Russia’s petroleum-processing infrastructure.
Reports indicated that a fire broke out at the refinery following the drone attack. Videos circulating after the incident showed smoke rising over the industrial area, although the full extent of damage to the refinery could not immediately be independently verified.
The attack is particularly significant because Ukraine has increasingly focused its long-range drone campaign on Russian refineries, fuel depots and other energy facilities. Kyiv has argued that these operations are designed to reduce Russia’s ability to finance and sustain its military campaign.
The Nizhnekamsk facility had reportedly been targeted previously, highlighting the growing pressure on Russia’s energy infrastructure.
Civilian Areas Also Suffered Heavy Losses
The attack was not limited to industrial infrastructure. Russian officials said civilian locations were also hit, with casualties reported in residential areas.
According to Reuters, several foreign nationals were among those killed, including seven Uzbek citizens and one Tajik national. Nine of the fatalities reportedly occurred at a hostel, underscoring the impact of the attack beyond the refinery complex.
The civilian deaths have intensified condemnation from Russian authorities, who accused Ukraine of deliberately striking civilian targets. Ukraine, however, has maintained that its military operations are directed at infrastructure supporting Russia’s war effort.
The conflicting claims could not immediately be independently verified.
