Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) witnessed widespread rainfall on Tuesday, bringing much-needed relief from humid weather even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red and orange alerts for several parts of the region. Authorities have cautioned residents about the possibility of heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and localized flooding over the next several hours as the monsoon system remains active.
Heavy Rain Sweeps Across Delhi-NCR
The day began with overcast skies before steady rainfall spread across many parts of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Faridabad, and adjoining areas. The showers led to a noticeable drop in temperatures, providing relief from the persistent heat and humidity that had affected residents over the past several days.
However, the rainfall also caused waterlogging in low-lying areas, slowing traffic movement during peak hours. Commuters faced delays on several major roads as vehicles moved through rain-soaked stretches while civic agencies monitored conditions across the city.
IMD Issues Red and Orange Alerts
The IMD has placed parts of Delhi under a red alert while issuing orange alerts for surrounding regions, indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. Weather officials have advised residents to remain indoors whenever possible during intense showers and avoid unnecessary travel.
According to the department, the current weather pattern is linked to an active monsoon system and a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. Traffic and Waterlogging Concerns

Officials have urged motorists to drive cautiously, maintain safe distances from other vehicles, and avoid routes known for severe waterlogging. Public transport services continued to operate, although commuters were advised to allow extra travel time because of possible delays.

Flight Operations Remain Normal
Despite adverse weather conditions, operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport remained largely unaffected. Airport authorities said flights continued to operate normally while ground staff coordinated closely with airlines to ensure passenger safety.

Meteorologists expect the current spell of rainfall to continue over the next few days. The IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies, intermittent light to moderate rainfall, and isolated heavy showers across Delhi-NCR.
The department has also warned of potential traffic disruptions, reduced visibility, and localized flooding during periods of intense rainfall. Residents living in low-lying areas have been advised to stay alert and follow official weather advisories.
The broader weather system is expected to bring heavy rainfall to several northern, central, and eastern states as the southwest monsoon remains active across the country.

Authorities have encouraged people to exercise caution throughout the rainfall period. Citizens have been advised to avoid flooded roads, stay away from open electric wires, and postpone non-essential outdoor activities during thunderstorms.
