NEW DELHI: Marking the birth anniversary of revolutionary freedom fighter Chandrashekhar Azad, Arts New Way Organisation (ANWO), in collaboration with Virat Acting Lab, staged the theatrical production “Azad Aur Azadi” at the Blank Canvas Auditorium in LTG Auditorium, Mandi House. The performance celebrated Azad’s contribution to India’s freedom movement while encouraging audiences to reflect on the country’s present-day social, political and moral challenges.

Presented through a blend of poetry, narration and dramatic performances, the production sought to bridge history with contemporary realities. Rather than presenting Azad merely as a historical icon, the play explored how his ideals continue to hold relevance in modern India, particularly in the context of justice, equality, freedom of expression and democratic values.

Theatre Celebrates Freedom and Questions the Present

The performance moved beyond a conventional historical tribute by examining the meaning of freedom in today’s society. Through dramatic storytelling, the production highlighted issues such as social inequality, injustice, moral decline, challenges faced by young people and the importance of protecting democratic institutions.

The narrative suggested that true freedom extends beyond independence from colonial rule. It portrayed liberty as an ongoing responsibility that requires citizens to stand against oppression, discrimination and fear in every generation.

The combination of emotionally charged poetry and theatrical storytelling created an engaging atmosphere, prompting audiences to reflect on the responsibilities that accompany freedom and democracy.

Dignitaries Praise Cultural Initiative

The event was attended by several distinguished guests, with Amit Kumar Pandey serving as the Chief Guest.

Among those present were Mrs. Monika Malhotra from Dehradun, senior Manipur Congress leader Mrs. Sanjita Lisham, poet Indu “Raj” Nigam, Convenor of Parampara Sanstha, and poet Rajendra Nigam “Raj”, Founder of Parampara Sanstha.

The guests appreciated the efforts of the organisers and artistes, noting that theatre remains one of the most effective mediums for social awareness and public dialogue. They observed that meaningful cultural productions encourage democratic thinking, strengthen national consciousness and inspire people to examine contemporary issues through the lens of history.

Organisers Emphasise Relevance of Azad’s Ideals

Speaking about the objective behind the production, organiser Rizwan Raza said the play was designed not only to honour Chandrashekhar Azad’s sacrifice but also to introduce younger generations to his ideals.

He said the dream of the revolutionary would remain incomplete unless society collectively stood against injustice, inequality and oppression. According to the organisers, remembering freedom fighters should go beyond ceremonial observances and inspire meaningful action rooted in courage, integrity and social responsibility.

The organisers added that the production aimed to create awareness about the continuing relevance of India’s freedom movement while encouraging thoughtful discussions on current social realities.

The production featured an accomplished cast that brought emotional intensity to the stage. Actors Arvind Kumar, C.R. Suresh, Kuldeep Vashishth, Aarav Vats, Prem Prajapati, Rajeev Sharma and Saira Ali portrayed various characters with conviction, contributing to the play’s overall impact.

Creative Vision Highlights Historical Legacy

The play was written, conceived and directed by R. S. Vikal, whose creative approach focused on presenting Chandrashekhar Azad’s philosophy as a living inspiration rather than a distant historical memory.

Through carefully crafted scenes and poetic narration, the production argued that the values associated with India’s freedom struggle remain relevant in addressing present-day concerns. It encouraged viewers to reflect on personal responsibility, ethical leadership and the importance of defending justice and equality.

According to the creative team, theatre has the ability to stimulate meaningful conversations while preserving historical memory, making it an effective medium for both artistic expression and social engagement.
