A devastating road accident in Himachal Pradesh claimed the lives of at least 13 people on Friday after a massive boulder crashed onto a moving Tata Sumo in Chamba district. The tragedy occurred on the Killar–Udaipur road near Kadu Nallah in the remote Pangi Valley, where a large section of the hillside reportedly collapsed, crushing the vehicle beyond recognition. Authorities have described the incident as one of the deadliest rockfall accidents in the region this monsoon season.
Sudden rockfall leaves no chance of survival
According to officials, the Tata Sumo was travelling through the mountainous stretch when a huge boulder detached from the hillside and landed directly on the vehicle. The impact completely flattened the SUV, leaving almost no possibility for the occupants to escape.
Local authorities and emergency responders rushed to the accident site after receiving information from residents and passing motorists. Rescue personnel began clearing debris with heavy equipment while carefully attempting to recover the victims trapped inside the mangled vehicle.
Initial reports confirmed that all 13 occupants of the vehicle lost their lives in the accident. The victims included men, women and reportedly a child, although authorities are continuing the process of formally identifying each individual and informing their families.
Rescue teams battle difficult terrain
The rescue operation proved extremely challenging due to the rugged terrain of Pangi Valley and the continuous threat of additional landslides. Large rocks and loose debris made access difficult for emergency workers, forcing them to proceed cautiously.
Police personnel, district administration officials and disaster response teams coordinated efforts to remove the boulder and recover the bodies. Authorities also worked to restore traffic movement along the affected stretch after ensuring the area was safe for rescue operations.
Officials stated that recovery operations continued for several hours because the vehicle had been almost completely crushed beneath the massive rock.
Local leaders express grief
Bharmour-Pangi MLA Dr. Janak Raj confirmed the deaths and expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He said the tragedy had shocked the entire region and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
The district administration has assured that all possible assistance will be provided to the victims’ families. Officials are also expected to conduct a detailed assessment of the accident site to determine whether additional preventive measures are required along the vulnerable highway.
Residents of Pangi Valley have long demanded stronger safety infrastructure, including protective barriers and regular monitoring of unstable mountain slopes, particularly during the rainy season.
Monsoon increases landslide risk
The accident comes as Himachal Pradesh continues to experience active monsoon conditions. Persistent rainfall over the past several days has weakened hill slopes across many districts, increasing the likelihood of landslides and falling rocks.
The India Meteorological Department has issued weather alerts for heavy rainfall in several parts of the state over the coming days. Forecasts indicate that monsoon activity is likely to intensify further, raising concerns about additional landslides, flash floods and road disruptions in the mountainous region.

Experts note that prolonged rainfall allows water to seep into mountain slopes, loosening rocks and soil. As a result, roads passing through steep valleys become particularly vulnerable to sudden rockfalls without any warning.
Killar–Udaipur road known for hazards
The Killar–Udaipur route is considered one of the most difficult roads in Himachal Pradesh. It passes through narrow mountain corridors with steep cliffs on one side and deep gorges on the other.
Every year during the monsoon, traffic along the route is frequently disrupted due to landslides and falling rocks. Despite regular maintenance efforts, unpredictable geological conditions continue to pose significant risks for commuters.
Authorities often advise travellers to avoid unnecessary journeys during periods of heavy rainfall and to closely follow weather advisories before travelling through high-altitude regions.
Investigation and safety review expected
Following the tragedy, officials are expected to conduct a detailed inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the accident. Geological experts may also inspect the affected hillside to assess its stability and recommend measures to reduce future risks.
The state administration is likely to review disaster preparedness on vulnerable mountain roads and examine whether additional protective structures, early warning systems or traffic restrictions are needed during periods of intense rainfall.
