The Indian Army has intensified its humanitarian response in flood-ravaged Assam by launching Operation Jal Rahat, rescuing more than 200 stranded residents from severely affected areas in Upper Assam. The operation comes as continuous rainfall and overflowing rivers have worsened the flood situation across several districts, leaving thousands displaced and disrupting normal life.
Army Launches Large-Scale Rescue Mission
To support the Assam government and local authorities, the Indian Army deployed four dedicated Flood Relief Columns to the worst-hit districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat. The rescue teams were mobilised after heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow, inundating villages and cutting off road connectivity.
Army personnel equipped with inflatable boats, life-saving equipment and communication systems reached marooned locations where residents had been stranded due to rising water levels. The swift response enabled the safe evacuation of more than 200 people, including women, children and elderly citizens.
Rescue Teams Carry Medical and Relief Supplies
Apart from evacuation operations, Army teams have been providing emergency assistance to affected families. Medical personnel accompanying the rescue columns have been treating minor injuries, distributing essential medicines and offering first aid to flood victims.
Relief materials, including food packets, drinking water and other essential supplies, are also being distributed in inaccessible areas where floodwaters have disrupted regular supply chains. The Army has coordinated closely with district administrations to ensure timely delivery of humanitarian assistance.

The flood crisis in Assam has continued to worsen following days of incessant rainfall across the northeastern region. Rising water levels in several rivers have submerged villages, agricultural fields and transportation networks, forcing thousands of residents to seek shelter in safer locations.

Operation Jal Rahat is being carried out in close coordination with the Assam government, district administrations and disaster management agencies. Rescue operations are focusing on identifying vulnerable populations, shifting them to relief camps and ensuring uninterrupted delivery of emergency supplies.

Medical teams are also monitoring the health of evacuees to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases and other health complications commonly associated with floods. Relief camps are being supplied with essential items to support displaced families until floodwaters recede.
Transport and Daily Life Disrupted
Floodwaters have affected road and rail connectivity across parts of Upper Assam. Inundated railway tracks have disrupted train services in some sections, while damaged roads have slowed relief operations in remote areas.
Educational institutions, local markets and public services have also been impacted as authorities focus on rescue and rehabilitation measures. Residents have been advised to avoid flooded areas and follow instructions issued by local administrations.
Authorities Continue Monitoring Situation
With forecasts indicating the possibility of additional rainfall, disaster response agencies remain prepared for further rescue operations if required. The Indian Army has assured that Operation Jal Rahat will continue until all stranded civilians are safely evacuated and immediate humanitarian needs are addressed.
Officials have appealed to residents living in vulnerable locations to remain alert, cooperate with rescue teams and move to designated relief shelters whenever advised by authorities.
