NEW DELHI: India’s state-owned telecom operator BSNL has introduced a new satellite phone priced at ₹1.34 lakh, marking another step in expanding communication services to areas where traditional mobile networks cannot reach. The device has been developed to provide reliable connectivity in remote, mountainous and disaster-prone regions, making it a valuable communication tool for government agencies and specialised users.
Unlike conventional smartphones that depend on nearby mobile towers, the satellite phone connects directly to satellites orbiting the Earth. This enables users to make voice calls and send messages even in locations where cellular coverage is completely absent, such as forests, deserts, high-altitude regions and offshore waters.
Built for Critical and Emergency Communication
The newly launched satellite phone is primarily aimed at users who operate in challenging environments. Disaster management authorities, security agencies, border personnel, maritime workers and emergency responders are expected to benefit the most from the device.
During natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes or cyclones, terrestrial telecom infrastructure often suffers extensive damage, disrupting communication networks. Satellite phones can continue functioning independently of mobile towers, allowing rescue teams to coordinate operations and remain connected during emergencies.
The launch also strengthens India’s efforts to improve communication resilience in geographically isolated areas where laying conventional telecom infrastructure remains difficult or economically unviable.
Satellite Connectivity Without Cellular Towers
The biggest highlight of the device is its ability to operate without depending on 4G or 5G mobile networks. Instead, it establishes communication through satellite networks, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity even in areas with zero mobile signal.
This makes the phone particularly useful for expeditions, military deployments, scientific research teams, shipping operations and government missions in inaccessible locations. Unlike standard smartphones, the satellite phone prioritises dependable voice communication over entertainment or high-speed internet services.
While satellite communication has existed for years, its deployment has traditionally been restricted because of higher operational costs and regulatory requirements.
Not Intended for General Consumer Use
Despite attracting attention for its unique capabilities, the ₹1.34 lakh satellite phone is not expected to become a mainstream consumer product.
Reports indicate that the device is currently intended mainly for authorised government departments and selected institutional users. Due to national security regulations governing satellite communication, public access remains limited and subject to official approvals.
Its specialised nature and premium price also make it suitable primarily for organisations requiring uninterrupted communication rather than everyday mobile users.
Part of BSNL’s Expanding Technology Portfolio
The satellite phone launch complements BSNL’s broader efforts to modernise its telecom services. Over the past two years, the company has accelerated the rollout of indigenous 4G infrastructure, expanded fibre broadband coverage and introduced Voice over Wi-Fi services across India.
BSNL has also been exploring satellite-based communication technologies through collaborations aimed at extending connectivity beyond conventional telecom networks. Earlier initiatives included satellite-to-device technology demonstrations capable of supporting emergency messaging and communication in network-dark zones.
Industry experts believe satellite communication will increasingly complement terrestrial mobile networks rather than replace them, particularly in regions where installing telecom towers remains impractical.
Growing Importance of Satellite Communication
Globally, satellite communication is becoming an important component of next-generation connectivity. Major technology companies and telecom providers are investing heavily in satellite-based services to bridge coverage gaps and improve emergency communications.
In India, the demand for reliable connectivity in border areas, islands, remote villages and maritime regions has encouraged greater focus on satellite technologies. Government agencies have also recognised their importance for disaster preparedness and national security.
BSNL’s latest satellite phone reflects this broader shift toward hybrid communication systems that combine terrestrial and satellite infrastructure to deliver uninterrupted connectivity.
Although the device comes with a premium price tag, its value lies in providing communication where ordinary mobile phones simply cannot function.
