NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: India’s monsoon continued to unleash widespread disruption on Thursday, with relentless rainfall inundating roads across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), while a major incident in Maharashtra’s Raigad district saw nearly 3,000 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders swept away by floodwaters into a river. Authorities in both regions have urged residents to remain cautious as heavy rain persists in several parts of the country.
Delhi-NCR Faces Waterlogging and Traffic Chaos
Continuous rainfall for a second consecutive day left several parts of Delhi submerged, slowing traffic and causing major inconvenience to commuters during peak hours. Waterlogging was reported from several key stretches, including the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Burari and National Highway-24 near the Akshardham area.
Motorists encountered long traffic queues as rainwater accumulated on major roads, reducing vehicle movement across the city. Commuters were advised to plan their journeys carefully due to congestion and slippery road conditions.
Neighbouring NCR cities also witnessed severe disruption. In Ghaziabad, roads in Indirapuram and Abhay Khand remained flooded, while Noida’s Sector 75 experienced extensive waterlogging after overnight showers. The situation reflected the impact of sustained rainfall across the region.
Fallen Trees Add to Urban Disruption
Apart from flooded roads, several areas in Delhi reported incidents of trees being uprooted due to strong winds and saturated soil. Civic authorities deployed emergency teams to clear blocked roads and restore normal movement.

The combination of waterlogged streets and fallen trees slowed emergency response and added to commuting difficulties for office-goers and residents. Municipal agencies continued pumping out water from vulnerable locations while monitoring rainfall patterns throughout the day.
Gurugram and NCR Continue to Struggle
The rainfall also affected Gurugram, where several residential and commercial areas remained inundated after heavy showers earlier in the week. Major roads experienced slow-moving traffic as water accumulated on important intersections.
Officials have been coordinating drainage operations while monitoring low-lying neighbourhoods vulnerable to flooding. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
Thousands of LPG Cylinders Washed Away in Maharashtra
In one of the most unusual monsoon-related incidents this season, approximately 3,000 LPG cylinders were swept away from a Hindustan Petroleum Corporation bottling facility in Panvel, located in Maharashtra’s Raigad district.
The heavy rainfall caused floodwaters to overflow into the facility, carrying both filled and empty cylinders into the Patalganga River. The incident prompted immediate concern among district authorities because of the potential safety hazards associated with drifting gas cylinders.
Officials confirmed that emergency teams were assessing the situation while efforts were initiated to trace and recover the cylinders.
Authorities Issue Public Safety Advisory
Following the incident, the Raigad district administration appealed to residents not to handle or store any LPG cylinders found along riverbanks or nearby areas.
Officials warned that recovered cylinders should not be taken home or used under any circumstances. Instead, members of the public were instructed to hand them over to authorised Hindustan Petroleum dealers, the local tehsildar’s office or the office of the sub-divisional officer in Pen.
The advisory was issued to prevent accidents involving damaged or displaced cylinders that may have been affected by floodwaters.
Flood Risks Continue Across Several States
The latest developments come as active monsoon conditions continue to affect multiple parts of India. Heavy rainfall has triggered flooding, landslides, transportation disruptions and damage to infrastructure in several states over the past few days.
Authorities remain on high alert in vulnerable districts, particularly in regions prone to flash floods and overflowing rivers. Disaster response agencies have been monitoring weather conditions while coordinating rescue and relief measures wherever necessary.
Citizens Urged to Remain Vigilant
Officials have advised residents in rain-affected regions to avoid travelling through waterlogged roads, stay away from flooded riverbanks and immediately report any hazardous objects carried by floodwaters.
Emergency services continue to monitor weather developments closely as forecasts indicate the possibility of further rainfall in several areas. Civic bodies have urged people to follow official advisories, remain alert and cooperate with local authorities until weather conditions improve.
