Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a heartfelt tribute to legendary Indian aviator and former Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik while addressing the Indonesian Parliament during his official visit to Jakarta. Highlighting the deep-rooted relationship between the two nations, Modi said Biju Patnaik’s extraordinary courage during Indonesia’s struggle for independence helped bring India and Indonesia closer than ever before.

The Prime Minister described Patnaik as one of the earliest architects of the strong bilateral relationship, recalling his daring mission to rescue Indonesian leaders during the country’s fight against Dutch colonial rule. Modi said history continues to remember Patnaik not only as a fearless pilot but also as a symbol of friendship between the people of India and Indonesia.

Remembering a Historic Rescue Mission

Modi recounted the remarkable events of 1947 when Indonesia was battling for independence. At the time, Dutch forces had tightened control over the region, making it nearly impossible for Indonesian nationalist leaders to travel abroad and seek international support.

Responding to an appeal from Indian leaders, Biju Patnaik undertook a highly risky flight into Indonesian territory. Flying a Dakota aircraft under dangerous circumstances, he successfully evacuated key Indonesian leaders and brought them safely to India, enabling them to participate in diplomatic efforts that drew global attention to Indonesia’s independence movement.

Modi said this courageous operation became a defining moment in the history of India-Indonesia relations and reflected India’s unwavering support for Indonesia’s sovereignty.

A Legacy Beyond Borders

The Prime Minister emphasized that Biju Patnaik’s contribution extended beyond aviation. His bravery earned him immense respect in Indonesia, where he is remembered as a close friend of the nation.

Indonesia has honoured Biju Patnaik for his contributions, and his legacy remains an important chapter in the shared history of both countries.

India and Indonesia Share a Deep Historical Connection

During his address, Modi stressed that India and Indonesia have enjoyed centuries of cultural, maritime and civilizational ties. He said both countries are connected not only by geography but also by common democratic values and a shared vision for peace and prosperity.

The Prime Minister pointed out that India consistently supported Indonesia’s independence movement and has remained a reliable partner throughout its modern history. He added that this historical goodwill continues to shape present-day cooperation across multiple sectors.

Partnership Enters a New Phase

Modi described the current phase of bilateral relations as the beginning of a “golden era.” He said India and Indonesia are expanding cooperation in defence, maritime security, trade, digital technology, education, agriculture and critical minerals.

The two countries also reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific region while strengthening cooperation in the Indian Ocean. Leaders from both sides agreed that closer strategic coordination would contribute to regional security and sustainable economic growth.

Shared Democratic Values

Addressing Indonesian lawmakers, Modi highlighted that both India and Indonesia are vibrant democracies that respect diversity, pluralism and the rule of law.

He said the relationship between the two countries is built on people-to-people connections and mutual trust rather than short-term interests. According to Modi, these shared values provide a strong foundation for deeper cooperation in the coming years.

Honouring an Enduring Friendship

The Prime Minister’s tribute to Biju Patnaik resonated strongly because of the former Odisha leader’s extraordinary role during Indonesia’s freedom struggle. His daring mission continues to be remembered as one of the finest examples of India’s support for a neighbouring nation seeking independence.

By recalling Patnaik’s legacy in the Indonesian Parliament, Modi underlined that history remains an important pillar of the modern India-Indonesia partnership. As both countries continue to strengthen strategic, economic and cultural cooperation, the story of Biju Patnaik serves as a reminder of how individual courage can shape relations between nations for generations.
