Australia have launched an investigation into an online threat directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi just days before his scheduled visit to Melbourne, prompting heightened security measures ahead of a series of official and community engagements.

According to Australian media reports, the threatening message appeared on social media beneath a promotional post for the “Melbourne Meets Modi” community reception, an event planned at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on July 9. The post reportedly contained a direct threat against the Indian Prime Minister, leading organisers to immediately alert law enforcement authorities.

Australian Federal Police Begin Investigation

The matter is now being investigated by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), which is examining the origin and intent of the threatening message. Reports indicate that investigators have already traced an IP address connected to the account responsible for posting the comment and are assessing whether criminal charges are warranted under Australian law.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed further operational details, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. However, Australian law enforcement agencies are known to treat threats against visiting foreign leaders with the highest level of seriousness, particularly when they involve internationally protected persons.

Security experts note that such investigations typically involve cooperation between federal agencies, state police forces and specialised protective security units responsible for safeguarding visiting heads of government.

Security Arrangements Under Review

Prime Minister Modi is expected to arrive in Australia next week for bilateral meetings and community outreach programmes. His itinerary includes participation in the Australia-India Annual Leaders’ Summit and a large gathering of the Indian diaspora in Melbourne.

Given the latest development, security planning surrounding the visit is expected to undergo additional review. Protective measures are likely to include enhanced surveillance, venue security checks, cyber monitoring and close coordination between Indian and Australian security agencies.

Officials have not indicated any change to the Prime Minister’s travel schedule, and preparations for the Melbourne event are continuing as planned.

Major Community Event in Melbourne

The “Melbourne Meets Modi” event has generated significant enthusiasm among members of the Indian diaspora across Australia. Organisers have spent months preparing for the programme, which is expected to draw thousands of attendees from different parts of the country.

The community reception is designed to celebrate the growing ties between India and Australia while providing an opportunity for the Indian community to interact with the visiting Prime Minister. Registration for the event has already witnessed strong public interest, reflecting the importance attached to the visit by the Indian diaspora.

Visit Expected to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

Prime Minister Modi’s Australia visit is expected to focus on strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries. Discussions are likely to cover trade, investment, defence cooperation, critical minerals, technology, education, clean energy and Indo-Pacific security.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed his anticipation for the Annual Leaders’ Summit, describing India as one of Australia’s most significant strategic and economic partners. Both leaders are expected to review ongoing cooperation and explore new opportunities to deepen bilateral engagement.

Relations between India and Australia have expanded considerably in recent years through increased collaboration in defence, maritime security, education, critical technologies and people-to-people exchanges.

Authorities Urge Vigilance

While investigators continue to examine the online threat, authorities have appealed for responsible use of social media and stressed that any threat directed at public officials is taken seriously under Australian law.

Law enforcement agencies are expected to continue monitoring both online and offline security risks ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival. Officials have emphasised that public safety remains their highest priority and that appropriate action will be taken if any violation of the law is established.

The investigation remains ongoing, with Australian authorities working to determine the motive behind the post and whether additional individuals were involved. Meanwhile, preparations for Prime Minister Modi’s official engagements and the Melbourne community reception continue under enhanced security arrangements.
