Chicago witnessed a strong display of patriotism and community spirit as members of the Indian-American community participated in the annual Memorial Day Parade at Arlington Heights, a suburb known for its deep military legacy and sacrifice. The town has lost 67 service members in the line of duty, making the occasion especially meaningful for residents and participants alike.
The Federation of Indian Associations (FIA)-Chicago led the Bharatiya community’s participation in the parade, joining Americans in honoring the brave men and women who laid down their lives in service to the nation. Organizers described Memorial Day as more than a holiday weekend, emphasizing that it is a solemn occasion dedicated to remembrance, gratitude, and respect for fallen heroes whose sacrifices continue to safeguard freedom and democracy.
Several prominent community leaders and representatives from social, cultural, and religious organizations took part in the event. Among them were FIA President and Founder-President of the Sanatan Ecosystem Hemant Patel, FIA Trustee Rakesh Malhotra associated with Sewa International and Global Indian Diaspora, and Rajendra Thakkar from Shree Jalaram Mandir. Dipali Sawant and her team from Maharashtra Mandal also joined the march along with FIA Executive and OF-BJP Coordinator Amar Upadhyay.
Entrepreneur Sanjay Vora represented Ekal Vidyalaya and the Vishva Hindu Parishad of America, while FIA Executive Anil Singh participated on behalf of Karni Sena. FIA Executive Yashaswini Desai from the Hindu Women Network was also present, alongside community leaders Yogesh Patel, Kishor Vora, and Dixit Vora.
One of the most emotional moments of the parade was the participation of Indian Army Brigadier Navin Ahuja and veteran Arvind Ankleshwaria, who marched proudly with FIA-Chicago. Ankleshwaria, associated with Shree Hanuman Mandir and also an FIA Executive, received warm appreciation from attendees and organizers alike. Their presence symbolized the shared values of courage, sacrifice, and service between India and the United States.
The parade organizing committee honored active and retired military personnel during the event in remembrance of fallen soldiers. Community members said that recognizing Indian Army veterans during the ceremony filled many attendees with pride and emotion. FIA-Chicago was widely appreciated for bringing Indian veterans into the spotlight during the observance.
The event also received support from sponsors including MAFS, UMAS, and Care for Soul, whose representatives joined the gathering and contributed to the successful participation of the community.
Participants described the parade as an inspiring and heartfelt occasion that strengthened bonds between the Indian diaspora and the broader American community. Organizers encouraged more community members to join future events aimed at promoting unity, patriotism, and cultural participation.
