NEW DELHI: India is preparing for a massive celebration of the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June 21, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to lead the national event at Red Road in Kolkata. The event, organised by the Ministry of Ayush, is expected to draw thousands of participants on-site and millions more virtually from across India and around the world.
The annual event has evolved into one of the world’s largest public wellness initiatives since the United Nations adopted June 21 as International Day of Yoga in 2014. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” aims to encourage people of all ages to adopt yoga as a lifelong practice for physical and mental well-being.
Kolkata to Become the Centrepiece of Global Yoga Celebrations
The main event will begin at 5 AM on June 21 at Kolkata’s iconic Red Road, where Prime Minister Modi will participate in the Common Yoga Protocol session alongside thousands of yoga enthusiasts.
The government expects participation from schools, colleges, institutions, resident welfare associations, armed forces personnel and citizens from diverse backgrounds. Millions more are anticipated to join digitally through organised events in their respective locations.
The choice of Kolkata as the host city also reflects the government’s effort to expand the geographical footprint of major national events while showcasing the cultural richness of eastern India.
Theme Focuses on Healthy and Active Ageing
The central theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” (स्वस्थ आयु के लिए योग), emphasises the role of yoga in promoting healthier lifestyles throughout different stages of life.
According to the Ministry of Ayush, yoga is increasingly being recognised as a preventive healthcare tool that can improve physical fitness, strengthen mental resilience and support emotional well-being. The initiative seeks to inspire citizens to integrate yoga into their daily routines rather than viewing it as a one-day event.
Government officials believe the theme is especially relevant as populations across the world are ageing rapidly and countries are looking for sustainable ways to improve long-term public health outcomes.
Yoga Sangam Portal Crosses Six Lakh Registrations
Ahead of the celebrations, the Yoga Sangam Portal has recorded a major milestone with more than six lakh organisations registering to host events.
The growing participation demonstrates yoga’s widespread acceptance across educational institutions, government departments, corporations, social organisations and community groups.
Officials say registrations continue to rise steadily, highlighting the transformation of yoga into a people’s movement rather than a government-driven campaign.
Key Highlights of Yoga Sangam Participation:
- More than six lakh organisations have registered.
- Events are being planned across urban and rural India.
- Institutions are encouraging community-level participation.
- Digital engagement is expected to significantly increase global visibility.
International Participation Reaches New Heights
The global footprint of International Day of Yoga continues to expand every year.
The Indian Council for Cultural Relations is coordinating events through over 210 Indian missions abroad, covering nearly 2,500 locations worldwide.
These celebrations will take place across continents, reinforcing India’s soft power diplomacy and positioning yoga as a universal tool for wellness and harmony.
Government officials said the extensive international participation demonstrates how an ancient Indian tradition has evolved into a global wellness movement transcending borders, languages and cultures.
Heritage Sites to Host Special Yoga Events
Adding a cultural dimension to the celebrations, the Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Survey of India will organise yoga sessions at 100 iconic heritage locations across the country.
Twelve major destinations have been selected for special events, including:
- Red Fort
- Haridwar
- Konark Sun Temple
- Hampi
- Mahabalipuram
- Mumbai
- Nalanda
- Ahmedabad
- Sarnath
- Leh
- Hyderabad
- Silchar
The initiative is intended to connect India’s ancient wellness practices with its cultural and historical heritage.
Citizens Encouraged to Join Virtually
The Ministry of Ayush has urged people to participate physically or virtually and share their yoga experiences on social media.
Participants attending the Kolkata event will also be introduced to Ayush Aahar, a nutritional initiative promoting holistic wellness and healthy dietary practices.
Officials believe that combining yoga, healthy food habits and community participation can strengthen India’s broader vision of preventive healthcare and improve quality of life for future generations.
With unprecedented participation expected both nationally and internationally, International Day of Yoga 2026 is set to become one of the largest global wellness events ever organised under India’s leadership.
