A fresh diplomatic exchange has emerged between India and the United States after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended Washington’s actions against commercial vessels suspected of violating its maritime blockade targeting Iranian oil exports.
During a conversation with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Rubio reportedly stressed that ships navigating through the Strait of Hormuz must follow directions issued by US forces without delay. He warned that attempts to breach the blockade or transport sanctioned cargo would face consequences.
“Violations of the US blockade will not be tolerated,” Rubio conveyed, reaffirming Washington’s determination to enforce restrictions on Iranian oil shipments and maintain control over maritime traffic in the strategically vital Gulf region.
The remarks came after India raised concerns over recent attacks on commercial vessels that resulted in the deaths of Indian seafarers. Jaishankar expressed India’s strong objections to the use of force against civilian shipping and emphasized the need to safeguard merchant sailors operating in international waters.
According to US officials, the actions were taken against vessels suspected of failing to comply with repeated military instructions. Washington maintains that strict enforcement measures are necessary to prevent sanctions evasion and ensure maritime security.
