The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved three major railway infrastructure projects with a combined investment of ₹10,783 crore, marking a significant push to expand rail capacity, improve connectivity and strengthen freight movement across five states.
The projects, approved for the Ministry of Railways, include the Kharagpur–Jharsuguda (Bagdehi) 4th Line, Katni–Pendra Road 4th Line and Bilaspur (Uslapur)–Pendra Road 3rd Line. Together, the projects are expected to substantially improve railway operations and reduce congestion on important routes.
Three Major Railway Projects Approved by Cabinet
The approved projects will add multiple railway lines to heavily used corridors, enabling trains to operate more efficiently and reliably. Increased line capacity is expected to support smoother passenger movement while also improving the transportation of essential commodities.
The projects will strengthen the railway network across West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Collectively, they will expand the existing Indian Railways network by approximately 656 kilometres.
The multi-tracking works are expected to improve connectivity to around 4,790 villages, covering a population of nearly 56 lakh people. The enhanced network is likely to create wider economic opportunities by improving access to markets, employment centres and essential services.
Major Push for PM Gati Shakti Connectivity
The railway expansion has been planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on integrated infrastructure development, multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency.
The projects are designed to improve coordination between different modes of transport and facilitate the seamless movement of people, goods and services. By expanding rail capacity along key corridors, the initiative aims to strengthen the country’s transportation infrastructure and improve the efficiency of supply chains.
The government has also linked the projects with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a New India, with comprehensive regional development expected to support employment and self-employment opportunities.
Freight Capacity Set to Rise Sharply
A major objective of the projects is to strengthen freight transportation along routes that are important for the movement of industrial and energy-related commodities.

The corridors are used for transporting commodities such as coal, cement, iron and steel, making additional rail capacity crucial for industries and the wider economy.
According to the government, the capacity augmentation is expected to generate additional freight traffic of approximately 27 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The increase would allow more goods to be transported by rail, potentially easing pressure on road networks and improving logistics efficiency.
Higher freight capacity could also contribute to lower transportation costs for businesses while supporting more reliable movement of raw materials and finished products.
Tourism Connectivity to Get a Major Boost
The projects are also expected to improve rail connectivity to several prominent tourist and religious destinations across the region.
Among the destinations identified are Taratarini Temple, Shri Khetra Jagannath Temple near Jharsuguda, Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Virateshwar Temple, Amarkantak Temple, Jwaleshwar Dham, Achanakmar Tiger Reserve, Khutaghat Dam, Malhar Archaeological Site and Ratanpur Mahamaya Temple.

Improved railway connectivity to these locations could make travel easier for tourists and pilgrims while supporting local economies dependent on tourism, hospitality, transport and small businesses.
Environmental Benefits From Expanded Rail Network
The government has highlighted the environmental advantages associated with shifting more freight and passenger movement towards railways.
Rail transport is considered an energy-efficient and relatively environment-friendly mode of transportation. The additional capacity created through these projects is therefore expected to contribute to India’s climate objectives while reducing dependence on fuel-intensive road transportation.
The capacity expansion is projected to help reduce oil imports by approximately 12 crore litres and lower carbon dioxide emissions by around 62 crore kilograms.
The estimated reduction in emissions is described as being equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting approximately 2.48 crore trees.
Projects Expected to Strengthen Regional Development
Beyond transportation, the railway expansion is expected to have a wider economic impact across the five states covered by the projects. Better rail connectivity can improve access to employment opportunities, markets, education, healthcare and other essential services for communities along the corridors.
The planned multi-tracking infrastructure will also provide additional capacity for future growth, helping Indian Railways respond to rising passenger and freight demand.
With a combined investment of ₹10,783 crore, the three projects represent a major infrastructure intervention aimed at easing congestion, strengthening logistics and creating more reliable railway connectivity.
The government’s focus on integrated planning under PM Gati Shakti, combined with increased freight capacity and improved access to tourism destinations, is expected to make these projects an important part of India’s broader railway modernization and infrastructure development drive.
