The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a fresh advisory urging Indian nationals travelling to Russia to exercise extreme caution while pursuing employment opportunities and to stay away from recruitment offers for the Russian armed forces. The warning comes amid continuing reports of Indian citizens being recruited into the Russian military through various channels.
The government said it has repeatedly highlighted the risks associated with such recruitment over the past two years and has advised Indians seeking employment abroad not to fall for offers made by unverified individuals or agents.
MEA Warns Against Russian Military Recruitment
According to the latest advisory, the government has encountered numerous cases in which Indian nationals have willingly sought opportunities to join the Russian armed forces after being attracted by promised financial benefits.
The MEA said some individuals apparently proceeded with the understanding that they could later approach the Indian government and seek assistance for their release.
The ministry strongly discouraged this approach, describing it as a dangerous course of action. It urged Indian citizens to carefully assess the consequences before accepting any such offer.
The warning is particularly significant because some recruitment offers may initially be presented as lucrative employment opportunities. The government has therefore stressed the importance of verifying the credentials of individuals and organisations offering jobs abroad.
Warning Over Citizenship and Russian Passport
The MEA also highlighted another serious concern involving Indian nationals who have sought to voluntarily give up their Indian citizenship, obtain Russian passports and subsequently join the Russian armed forces.

The ministry said there have been numerous instances in which individuals approached Indian authorities regarding such actions, while some had already proceeded without consulting Indian officials after being attracted by temporary financial benefits.
The government urged citizens to consider the gravity of such decisions and understand the potentially fatal risks associated with serving in an armed conflict.
It advised Indian nationals to refrain from taking such steps merely for short-term monetary gains.
Caution Against Unverified Recruitment Agents
The advisory also raises concerns about recruitment being conducted by non-public entities, including voluntary groups.
The MEA said foreign nationals are being recruited into the Russian armed forces through such entities and advised Indian citizens to conduct proper due diligence before accepting employment offers from agents.

In particular, Indians have been urged to be cautious about recruiters who are not registered with the Ministry of External Affairs.
The government’s warning underscores the need to verify the legitimacy and nature of any overseas employment opportunity before travelling or signing agreements.
Government Engaged With Russia for Indians’ Safety
The MEA said the Government of India remains continuously engaged with the Russian side regarding Indian nationals serving in the Russian armed forces.
The stated objective is to ensure their safety and well-being and facilitate their early discharge from the Russian armed forces.
The latest advisory reflects the government’s continuing efforts to prevent Indian citizens from being drawn into military service through recruitment offers that may carry significant personal risks.
India Reiterates Strong Warning to Citizens
The MEA’s message is clear: Indian nationals should not treat recruitment into the Russian armed forces as an ordinary overseas employment opportunity.
The ministry has repeatedly urged citizens to exercise caution when considering jobs abroad, particularly when offers come from unknown individuals, private groups or unverified agents.
With reports of Indians continuing to enter the Russian military through different recruitment channels, the government has reiterated that temporary financial incentives should not overshadow the serious dangers associated with such decisions.
The advisory also reinforces India’s ongoing diplomatic engagement with Russia concerning the safety and early discharge of Indian nationals already serving in the country’s armed forces.
