PM Modi Lauds ISRO GSLV-F17 Launch: “Proud Moment For Our Nation”

India’s space programme achieved another major milestone on Friday as the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the GSLV-F17 rocket carrying the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO and described the successful mission as a proud moment for the nation.

The GSLV-F17 lifted off at 2:55 a.m. IST from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, during a pre-dawn launch. The mission successfully placed EOS-05 into its designated Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO), marking an important achievement for India’s Earth observation and launch vehicle capabilities.

PM Modi Praises ISRO’s Growing Space Capabilities

Following the successful launch, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO and its teams for what he called another outstanding achievement.

He highlighted the significance of EOS-05 as India’s first imaging satellite designed to operate from geosynchronous orbit and said the mission demonstrated the excellence, innovation and expanding capabilities of India’s space sector.

PM Modi said on a X post, “Yet another outstanding achievement by ISRO and a proud moment for our nation. The successful launch of GSLV-F17 carrying EOS-05, India’s first-ever imaging satellite from Geosynchronous orbit is a reflection of the excellence, innovation and growing capabilities that define India’s space sector. The growing partnership between ISRO and Indian industry is adding new strength and scale to our space programme and expanding India’s capabilities across the entire space ecosystem.”

The Prime Minister also underlined the increasingly important role of Indian industry in the country’s space programme. According to him, the growing cooperation between ISRO and domestic industry is providing additional strength and scale to India’s space ambitions while helping expand the country’s broader space ecosystem.

GSLV-F17 Completes 19th Mission

The latest launch marks the 19th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle programme. Mission Director Thomas Kurian described the achievement as an important milestone, noting that the mission involved a specially configured Earth observation spacecraft capable of near-real-time imaging.

The GSLV-F17 stands 51.7 metres tall and has a liftoff mass of approximately 420.5 tonnes. Its successful performance reinforces the role of the GSLV as one of India’s key operational launch systems for placing heavier spacecraft into higher orbits.

EOS-05 Strengthens India’s Earth Observation Network

The EOS-05 satellite is expected to significantly strengthen India’s ability to observe and monitor the country from space. The spacecraft is designed to provide a continuous bird’s-eye view from an altitude of nearly 36,000 kilometres above Earth.

Its advanced imaging capabilities are expected to support a wide range of applications. Earth observation data generated by India’s satellite programmes can assist sectors such as agriculture, water-resource management, urban planning, forestry, environmental monitoring, ocean resources and disaster management.

EOS-05 has been described as a state-of-the-art Earth observation spacecraft capable of imaging across visible, infrared, multispectral and hyperspectral bands. Its geosynchronous-orbit capability is particularly significant because it can provide sustained observation of a region compared with conventional Earth observation satellites operating from lower orbits.

A Major Achievement for India’s Space Programme

The successful mission also comes at an important stage in India’s expanding space ambitions. ISRO has been pursuing an ambitious launch roadmap involving communication, navigation, Earth observation, scientific and human-spaceflight missions.
