SURAT: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated, dedicated to the nation and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth more than ₹18,800 crore in Surat, Gujarat, marking one of the largest infrastructure and development initiatives unveiled in the state this year. The projects span critical sectors including roads, power, healthcare, industry and urban development, with the government aiming to accelerate economic growth while improving the quality of life for citizens.

Addressing a large gathering in Surat, the Prime Minister said the projects would strengthen Gujarat’s growth trajectory and contribute significantly to India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation. He described the initiatives as transformative investments that would improve connectivity, generate employment opportunities and enhance public services across the region. According to the Prime Minister, the projects are designed to boost both economic activity and ease of living for citizens.

Modi’s visit came shortly after local body election victories in Gujarat. He congratulated newly elected representatives from Surat and neighbouring regions and urged them to treat the public mandate as a responsibility to serve people with greater dedication. He stressed that the goal of building a developed Gujarat and a developed India could only be achieved through the balanced development of villages, towns, districts and cities across the country.

The Prime Minister highlighted Surat’s remarkable transformation over the past few decades. Once remembered for facing severe public health challenges, the city is now widely recognized as one of India’s cleanest urban centres. He credited this achievement to the collective efforts of citizens, local administrations, public representatives and government officials who worked together to improve sanitation and urban management.

Since the event coincided with World Environment Day, Modi placed special emphasis on sustainable development. He said India’s development model is increasingly guided by the principle of achieving economic progress while protecting the environment. According to him, the country is moving forward with a vision that combines growth with ecological responsibility rather than treating the two as opposing objectives.

The Prime Minister also pointed to the government’s long-running efforts to promote environmental conservation through public participation. He noted that over the last twelve years, India has witnessed the rise of a large “waste-to-wealth” movement that encourages recycling, resource recovery and scientific waste management. Such initiatives, he said, have played a key role in improving urban cleanliness while creating economic value from discarded materials.

Among the key projects unveiled during the event were major investments in road infrastructure, power generation and industrial development. These projects are expected to improve logistics efficiency, strengthen energy availability and attract further investment into Gujarat’s rapidly expanding industrial ecosystem. The government believes that improved infrastructure will help industries reduce costs while supporting long-term economic competitiveness.

Healthcare infrastructure also received a significant boost. The Prime Minister highlighted the inauguration of a modern Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) hospital in Surat. The facility is expected to provide improved medical services to workers and their families, including migrant labourers who form an important part of Gujarat’s industrial workforce. Enhanced healthcare access, officials said, will contribute to greater social security and workforce productivity.

Modi further stated that India continues to advance despite global uncertainties and emerging international challenges. He expressed confidence that the collective efforts of 140 crore Indians would enable the nation to overcome obstacles and sustain its development momentum. Stressing the importance of optimism and national resolve, he said India’s aspirations are unmatched and that no objective is beyond reach when citizens work together with determination.

The Surat projects reflect the government’s broader strategy of combining large-scale infrastructure creation with sustainability, social welfare and industrial expansion. Gujarat, already a major manufacturing and investment destination, is expected to benefit significantly from the latest round of public investments. Analysts believe the projects will strengthen the state’s position as a key driver of India’s economic growth while supporting the national objective of becoming a developed economy by 2047.

The event also carried symbolic significance as it linked economic development with environmental stewardship on World Environment Day. By emphasizing both “economy and ecology,” the Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to pursuing growth that is inclusive, sustainable and future-oriented. As thousands of crores worth of projects move from planning to execution, Surat is poised to emerge as an even stronger centre of industry, innovation and urban development in the years ahead.
