NEW DELHI: Marking World Environment Day, the Headquarters District of Northern Railway Bharat Scouts and Guides concluded its 20-day “Environmental Awareness Mega Campaign” with a grand closing ceremony on Friday. The campaign, which commenced on May 17, aimed to promote environmental conservation, cleanliness, sustainable waste management, and responsible civic behavior among citizens, especially young people.

The extensive awareness drive was conducted under the guidance of senior officials of the North Railway Headquarters District. The initiative sought to encourage communities to adopt environmentally friendly practices and contribute towards building a cleaner and greener future.

Throughout the campaign, volunteers, Scouts, Guides, and railway officials engaged in a series of educational and outreach activities focused on environmental protection. The programme highlighted key issues such as waste segregation, plastic pollution, recycling, water conservation, and the importance of preserving natural resources.

One of the major highlights of the campaign was a large-scale environmental awareness rally organized on May 31 at the Scout Hut in Kishanganj Railway Colony. Hundreds of participants, including Scouts, Guides, leaders, and officials, marched through the locality carrying banners and placards carrying messages on environmental protection. The rally attracted significant public attention and encouraged local residents to adopt eco-friendly habits in their daily lives.

In addition to the rally, nearly 200 Scouts and Guides presented a powerful street play aimed at educating the public about modern waste management practices. Through engaging performances, the young volunteers explained the importance of separating wet and dry waste, reducing dependence on single-use plastics, and embracing the principles of “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” (RRR). The performance effectively communicated how individual actions can collectively make a significant difference in protecting the environment.

The campaign also focused on involving children and youth through creative activities. Drawing and slogan-writing competitions were organized on May 23 at Shakur Basti and again on May 31 in Delhi Kishanganj. The competitions were conducted across multiple age groups ranging from young children to teenagers.

More than 125 participants showcased their creativity by depicting themes such as water conservation, afforestation, biodiversity protection, climate change, and the dangers of global warming. The competitions provided a platform for children to express their environmental concerns and solutions through art and literature. Organizers noted that the enthusiastic participation reflected growing awareness among the younger generation about environmental challenges.

The grand closing ceremony held on World Environment Day also served as an occasion to recognize outstanding contributions made by Scouts, Guides, and leaders during the campaign. Several awards and certificates were distributed to acknowledge dedication, discipline, and exceptional service.

A total of 25 Scouts and Guides received the prestigious State Award Certificate for their commendable achievements and consistent performance. The recognition highlighted their commitment to community service, leadership, and environmental awareness activities.

The event also celebrated the accomplishments of three distinguished leaders from the Headquarters District. Virendra Kumar and Devendra Kumar were honored with Assistant Leader Trainer Certificates, recognizing their contributions to training and youth development. Dharmendra Kumar received the highly respected Himalayan Wood Badge, one of the significant distinctions in the scouting movement, for his dedication and leadership.

The successful campaign was carried out under the leadership and guidance of Arvind Nautiyal, President of the organization and Senior Deputy General Manager; Rajeev Bajaj, Vice President and Chief Personnel Officer (Industrial Relations); Mansi Verma, District Commissioner (Guides) and Deputy Chief Personnel Officer; and Hemlata, Assistant District Commissioner (Guides) and Senior Statistical and Analytical Officer.

Addressing the gathering, organizers emphasized that plastic pollution and mounting waste generation pose serious threats to environmental sustainability. They urged citizens to adopt simple yet impactful lifestyle changes, such as reducing plastic consumption, segregating household waste, conserving water, and supporting recycling initiatives.

The ceremony concluded with a collective pledge to work towards a cleaner and healthier environment. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to promoting sustainable practices within their communities and spreading awareness about environmental responsibility.

Several distinguished members attended the event, including District Organization Commissioner (Guide) Dr. Sapna Dutta, District Secretary Devendra Kumar, Sanjeev Dutta, District Trainer (Scout) Aneesh Kumar, Anita Pathak, Joint Secretary Nivedita, Shakti Singh, and other senior members. They congratulated the participants and encouraged them to continue serving as ambassadors of environmental conservation.

The successful completion of the 20-day campaign underscored the growing role of youth-led initiatives in promoting environmental awareness and demonstrated how collective action can contribute to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable India.
