Modi Meets Putin: India-Russia Ties Get Major Push With $100 Billion Trade Goal

0

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held bilateral talks in New Delhi on Friday, September 11, ahead of the formal opening of the 18th BRICS Summit. The high-level meeting comes as India and Russia seek to deepen their long-standing strategic partnership, with expanding bilateral trade and economic cooperation emerging as major priorities.

$100 Billion Trade Target Takes Centre Stage

A key focus of the discussions is expected to be the ambitious goal of taking annual India-Russia bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030. Bilateral trade is currently around $60 billion, meaning both sides would need to generate nearly $40 billion in additional trade over the next four years to meet the target.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has urged businesses in both countries to accelerate economic engagement and sustain strong annual growth. Speaking at the INNOPROM India 2026 Co-Chair Plenary Session in New Delhi, Goyal highlighted the scale of the challenge and called for stronger industrial and commercial partnerships between India and Russia.

The trade target reflects an effort to move beyond traditional areas of India-Russia commerce and create a broader economic relationship involving manufacturing, technology, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and other sectors.

INNOPROM Opens New Industrial Opportunities

The successful hosting of INNOPROM India 2026 is also expected to feature in the Modi-Putin discussions. The international industrial exhibition has provided a platform for Russian and Indian companies to explore new business partnerships and investment opportunities.

The exhibition could help expand cooperation in areas including railways, tunnelling, steel and industrial manufacturing. It is also expected to create additional business-to-business opportunities while helping Indian companies gain wider access to the Russian market.

For India, expanding industrial cooperation with Russia could support efforts to diversify supply chains and develop new markets for Indian manufacturers. For Russia, deeper engagement with India’s growing economy offers opportunities to expand investment and manufacturing partnerships.

Nuclear Energy, Critical Minerals Also on Agenda

Economic cooperation is not limited to trade in conventional goods. The two leaders are also expected to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in civil nuclear energy, including fuel-cycle cooperation and life-cycle support.

Russia

Nuclear cooperation has remained an important component of the India-Russia strategic relationship, and further collaboration could strengthen long-term energy security while opening opportunities for industrial partnerships.

Critical minerals are another emerging area of interest. As countries worldwide seek reliable supplies of minerals essential for advanced manufacturing, clean-energy technologies and strategic industries, India and Russia are exploring possibilities for greater cooperation in this sector.

The discussions are also expected to cover mobility and the possibility of increasing opportunities for skilled Indian workers in Russia.

Fertiliser Cooperation Remains Important

Fertiliser cooperation is another significant component of the economic relationship. The two sides are looking at ways to sustain and increase cooperation through strategic joint-venture projects.

Russia has become an important supplier of energy and fertilisers to India, while New Delhi has sought to maintain reliable access to essential commodities. Expanding long-term partnerships could therefore strengthen economic resilience for both countries.

At the same time, India is looking to increase exports to Russia in sectors where Indian companies possess competitive advantages. Pharmaceuticals, food products, engineering goods and other manufactured items are among the areas identified as having potential for expansion.

Putin’s BRICS Visit Adds Strategic Weight

Putin’s visit to New Delhi carries significance beyond the bilateral relationship. He arrived in India on Friday to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit, marking an important diplomatic engagement at a time of heightened global geopolitical tensions.

During the BRICS Business Forum, Putin is expected to present initiatives covering trade, investment, economic cooperation and transportation. The forum provides an opportunity for businesses and governments from BRICS countries to identify new areas of commercial collaboration.

India’s BRICS presidency also gives New Delhi an important platform to promote greater economic cooperation among emerging economies while advancing its own strategic and commercial interests.

India-Russia Partnership Enters a New Economic Phase

The Modi-Putin meeting demonstrates that India-Russia relations are increasingly focused on broadening economic engagement alongside their established strategic ties.

The proposed $100-billion trade target will require sustained growth, greater market access and a significant expansion of non-traditional trade. Stronger industrial partnerships, investment flows and improved connectivity will be crucial if both sides are to close the nearly $40-billion gap over the coming years.

With cooperation spanning energy, nuclear power, fertilisers, critical minerals, transportation, manufacturing and technology, the India-Russia relationship is entering a phase in which economic diversification could become one of its strongest pillars.

The discussions in New Delhi therefore carry importance not only for the two countries’ immediate commercial interests but also for their broader strategic partnership. As Modi and Putin seek to give fresh momentum to bilateral ties, the $100-billion trade ambition has emerged as a powerful benchmark for the next phase of India-Russia economic relations.
