LUCKNOW: The devastating fire that tore through a commercial building in Lucknow’s Aliganj area has now shifted from being a rescue operation to a major accountability investigation. After the tragedy claimed 15 lives and injured several others, authorities have launched strict action against those allegedly responsible for negligence and violations that may have contributed to the disaster.
The Uttar Pradesh government has arrested three individuals and suspended four officials as investigators continue to examine how a building accommodating educational and commercial activities was allowed to operate despite apparent safety concerns.
Focus Turns Towards Accountability
As rescue teams completed their operations, attention quickly moved to identifying lapses that may have transformed the building into a death trap.
Authorities suspect multiple violations, including inadequate fire safety arrangements, poor emergency exit planning and possible unauthorized modifications inside the building. Preliminary investigations suggest that proper safety measures may not have been implemented despite the presence of numerous students and employees inside the premises every day.
Officials have also begun examining whether mandatory fire safety certificates were either absent, expired or ignored during routine inspections.
Three Individuals Arrested
Police have arrested three people linked to the management and operation of the commercial establishment.
Investigators are questioning them regarding alleged negligence in maintaining fire safety infrastructure and whether they ignored warnings related to overcrowding and emergency preparedness.
Authorities are also investigating whether the building owners and operators continued functioning despite knowing about safety deficiencies. Police officials have indicated that additional arrests could be made if evidence points to a wider chain of responsibility.
Multiple sections related to causing death by negligence, endangering human life and violating safety regulations are expected to be included in the ongoing investigation.
Four Government Officials Suspended
The Uttar Pradesh government has also taken disciplinary action against four officials for alleged administrative failures.
The suspended officials are accused of lapses connected to inspections, monitoring and enforcement of safety regulations. Investigators are trying to determine whether mandatory checks were conducted properly and whether any irregularities were overlooked.
The suspensions send a strong message that accountability will not be limited to private operators alone, but will also extend to government personnel responsible for ensuring compliance with safety standards.

CM Adityanath Orders Strict Investigation
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath personally visited the accident site and later met injured survivors undergoing treatment at King George’s Medical University.
He directed senior officials to conduct a time-bound investigation and identify every individual responsible for negligence.
The Chief Minister also instructed departments across Uttar Pradesh to immediately inspect coaching centres, libraries, educational institutions and commercial buildings to ensure they comply with fire safety norms.
According to officials, no guilty person will be spared regardless of their position or influence.
Rescue Teams Battled Intense Smoke
Emergency personnel from the fire department, SDRF, NDRF and local police worked for several hours to rescue trapped occupants.
The operation was particularly challenging because thick smoke spread rapidly throughout the building, reducing visibility and blocking evacuation routes.
Several victims reportedly died due to suffocation after becoming trapped inside enclosed spaces while trying to escape.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as students attempted to flee through windows and balconies when traditional exit routes became inaccessible.
Compensation Announced For Victims
The state government has announced ₹5 lakh compensation for the families of those who lost their lives and ₹50,000 for every injured victim.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the tragedy and announced financial assistance through the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.

The Lucknow fire has once again exposed serious concerns regarding fire safety enforcement in India’s rapidly expanding urban centres.
