Security forces have intensified their crackdown against suspected terror-linked networks in Jammu and Kashmir, with police conducting simultaneous searches at 26 locations in the Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Sunday. The locations searched included Bomai, Tarzoo, Shutloo, Rohama, Goripora and Behrampora, among other areas. Security personnel simultaneously entered multiple premises as part of the investigation, with officials examining material that could potentially shed light on the activities of the proscribed organisation and its wider network.
The searches are being conducted under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Authorities have not announced any fresh arrests in connection with Sunday’s operation so far.
The coordinated nature of the searches reflects the focus of security agencies on identifying possible support structures and gathering evidence related to organisations that have been accused of maintaining separatist or terror-related links.
Jamaat-e-Islami Remains Under Government Ban
Jamaat-e-Islami was declared an unlawful association by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs in 2019 under the UAPA. The ban followed allegations concerning the organisation’s separatist activities and links to terrorism. The government subsequently extended the prohibition for another five years in February 2024.
The latest searches are therefore part of a broader enforcement effort aimed at monitoring and investigating individuals and networks allegedly connected with the banned organisation.
Security agencies have increasingly focused on financial, logistical and organisational networks that could potentially provide support to militant groups or facilitate extremist activities.

On July 22, terrorists reportedly shot dead a policeman at close range in Anantnag town. A week later, two migrant labourers were killed in a targeted attack in neighbouring Kulgam district.
These incidents triggered intensified counter-terror operations across Kashmir, with security agencies conducting extensive searches and questioning individuals suspected of having links with militant networks. More than 3,000 people were reportedly detained during the wider security crackdown following the Anantnag attack, although estimates regarding the total number of detentions have varied.
Focus on Terror Support Networks
The latest operation in Sopore indicates that security agencies are not limiting their efforts to pursuing armed militants alone. Investigators are also examining possible support systems that could assist terrorist organisations through shelter, logistics, communications, financing or other forms of assistance.
