NEW DELHI: India is preparing for a major transformation in its solar manufacturing sector, with plans to increase domestic solar wafer and ingot production capacity to 33 gigawatts (GW) by the financial year 2030. The ambitious expansion, supported by an estimated investment of ₹80,000 crore, is expected to significantly strengthen the country’s renewable energy ecosystem and reduce dependence on imported components.

The proposed target marks a dramatic rise from the current domestic wafer and ingot manufacturing capacity of around 2 GW. If achieved, the expansion would represent more than a sixteen-fold increase in less than a decade, underscoring India’s determination to emerge as a global hub for solar manufacturing.

Solar wafers and ingots are critical components in the production of solar cells and modules. While India has made considerable progress in increasing solar module manufacturing capacity in recent years, the country has continued to rely heavily on imports for upstream components such as wafers and ingots.
