Indian Railways has reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe and hygienic drinking water to passengers by operating 19 Rail Neer plants across the country. The national transporter stated that the existing network of plants is currently meeting the demand for packaged drinking water in major trains and railway stations, ensuring reliable access to clean water for millions of travelers every year.
According to information shared by the Ministry of Railways, the production and distribution of Rail Neer packaged drinking water are being managed through operational plants strategically located across different states. The initiative is aimed at ensuring passengers receive safe drinking water during their rail journeys while maintaining quality standards.
The ministry noted that the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has been entrusted with establishing Rail Neer plants at locations identified on the basis of passenger demand and operational requirements across the Indian Railways network.
Each Plant Produces One Lakh Bottles Daily
The government stated that every Rail Neer plant has a production capacity of one lakh bottles per day. To establish a new facility under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the estimated investment is around ₹10 crore.
The estimated project cost includes the construction of a pre-engineered building, installation of machinery, and related infrastructure. However, the land cost is excluded from this estimate, making site availability an important factor in future expansion plans.
Rail Neer Plants Spread Across 19 Locations
The operational Rail Neer plants are spread across several states to cater to regional demand. These facilities are located at:
- Nangloi (Delhi)
- Danapur (Bihar)
- Ambernath (Maharashtra)
- Palur (Tamil Nadu)
- Maneri (Madhya Pradesh)
- Amethi (Uttar Pradesh)
- Nagpur (Maharashtra)
- Una (Himachal Pradesh)
- Hapur (Uttar Pradesh)
- Jagiroad (Assam)
- Sankrail (West Bengal)
- Kota (Rajasthan)
- Mandideep (Madhya Pradesh)
- Sanand (Gujarat)
- Bhusawal (Maharashtra)
- Bhubaneswar (Odisha)
- Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh)
- Simhadri (Andhra Pradesh)
- Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh)
The geographical spread of these plants enables Indian Railways to serve passengers across multiple railway zones while reducing transportation challenges associated with packaged drinking water.
Demand Being Met Across Key Trains and Stations
The ministry said the present production capacity is sufficient to meet the demand for Rail Neer in important trains and railway stations. By maintaining a distributed network of manufacturing units, Indian Railways aims to ensure timely supply and consistent availability even during periods of heavy passenger movement.

The information was presented in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw while replying to a parliamentary question.
The government highlighted that future expansion of Rail Neer production facilities will continue to depend on passenger demand and operational requirements across the railway network.
