The Government of India has accorded a status equivalent to that of a Union Cabinet Minister to India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, for ceremonial and protocol purposes. The move is being viewed as a reflection of the importance New Delhi places on its diplomatic engagement with Bangladesh and comes at a time when both countries are seeking to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
According to official sources, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued an office memorandum granting Trivedi a higher position in the Table of Precedence. The special status is applicable only for ceremonial functions and protocol-related matters and does not confer executive powers equivalent to those of a Cabinet Minister.
The decision has drawn attention because such protocol elevations are relatively uncommon for serving diplomats. Officials indicated that the measure underlines the significance India attaches to its ties with Bangladesh, a key neighbour with whom New Delhi shares extensive economic, cultural, security and strategic interests.
Dinesh Trivedi, a veteran politician and former Union Minister, was appointed as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh earlier this year. His appointment itself marked a departure from the traditional practice of assigning career diplomats to the position. He became one of the few political appointees to head India’s mission in Dhaka, signalling a more politically driven approach to managing relations with Bangladesh.
Trivedi has had a long political career spanning several decades. He served as Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and later as Union Railway Minister. He has also represented West Bengal in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha and has been associated with multiple political parties during his public life.
His appointment as envoy came at a crucial period in India-Bangladesh relations. Over the past two years, diplomatic ties between the two countries have faced challenges due to political developments in Bangladesh and regional geopolitical shifts. However, both governments have recently shown interest in strengthening engagement across sectors such as trade, connectivity, energy, education and technology.
Trivedi formally assumed his diplomatic responsibilities in Bangladesh earlier this month. Upon arriving in the country, he emphasised the importance of people-to-people connections and highlighted the potential for deeper cooperation between the two neighbours. He also stressed that dialogue remains the most effective way to address differences and expand regional development opportunities.
Analysts believe Trivedi’s political experience, familiarity with West Bengal and fluency in Bengali could help him navigate the complexities of India-Bangladesh relations. His background is considered particularly relevant given the cultural and historical links shared by the two nations.
The Centre’s decision to grant him Cabinet-rank protocol status is expected to enhance the symbolic importance of his role and facilitate high-level interactions. While the elevation is largely ceremonial, it sends a message about the priority India places on maintaining close and constructive relations with Bangladesh.
As India and Bangladesh continue efforts to deepen cooperation and address regional challenges, Trivedi’s tenure is likely to be closely watched.
